2007 Frankfurt International Book Fair opens

Thursday, October 11, 2007

Wednesday morning, the Frankfurt Book Fair opened its gates to the first of an estimated 280,000 visitors this year in Frankfurt am Main, Germany.

The Frankfurt Book Fair is the biggest book fair in the world. It also organises the participation of German publishers at more than 25 international book fairs and is the co-founder of the Cape Town Book Fair in South Africa. It maintains the most visited website worldwide for the publishing industry.

The German Publishers & Booksellers Association, which runs the Frankfurt Book Fair, says that the book market is thriving. It declared on Tuesday that the high number of exhibitors and the record numbers of 7,448 exhibitors from over 100 countries, showing 391,652 books, including 121,267 new books of this year, proves that the book market is thriving.

Publishing houses have long since expanded into non-traditional markets. TV and merchandising rights have long played a role, but have become more and more important for larger projects. Two other media forms have also become more standard elements of the value chain. E-books and audiobooks are both big topics of this year’s Book Fair.

The various awards handed out during and around the fair show the variety and scope of media and interests represented at the Frankfurt Book Fair:

 • On Sunday, October 7, Australian writer Michelle de Kretser, born in Colombo. Sri Lanka, was awarded the LiBeratur-award for the German edition of her book ‘The Hamilton Case’, previously published in English with Little, Brown and Company, New York. The LiBeratur-award for an outstanding publication of a woman from Africa, Asia and Latin America in German language in the previous year, was awarded for the 20th time.
 • On Tuesday, October 9, German author Julia Franck was honoured with the German Book Prize for her novel ‘Die Mittagsfrau’. Against the background of two world wars, Julia Franck tells the disturbing story of a woman who leaves her son, without fnding herself.
 • On Wednesday, October 10, the software award GIGA-Maus for family friendly and educational entertainment was awarded to Wii Sports (Nintendo) for best software of the year. The award of the children judges went to Buzz! Junior: Robo Jam(Sony, PS2).
 • On Sunday, October 14, the Peace Prize of the German Booksellers will be awarded to Saul Friedländer, for his retelling of the Shoah as one of the most important historiographers of the time.

Prizes still open include the German Young Literature Award on Friday and the Fantasy Final of the first German Cosplay Masters at the comic-centre of the book fair.

The Complete Guide To Successful Goal Setting}

Submitted by: Ursula Jorch

What is the point of setting goals? Its not even that you are more likely to achieve what you want to achieve, though thats certainly true.

Here are the two biggest benefits of goal setting:

1. Goal setting gives you with focus. Youll zoom in on the actions you need to take to achieve whatever you desire for your business.

2. Youll stretch and grow in ways you havent before. Youll become bigger. Youll become the person you need to be to achieve those goals.

In life, we tend to look long-term and live short-term. In the short-term, you can bump up against some obstacles and challenges. By setting goals, youll develop your long-term view.

When those goals are powerful, when they are aligned with your desired impact, youll be able to move through those short-term obstacles. Youll be able to act and ensure that your goals actually are achieved.

The most powerful goals are those that are rooted in impact, in the positive contribution you want to make. Lets take a look at the 6 elements of IMPACTful goals, to guide you to really potent goal setting.

Impactful

Is your goal aligned with your impact vision? Your impact vision is the difference you want to make in the world, the unique positive contribution that only you can make. Youre unique, so your impact will be too. No one else can bring all of what you bring to your business and your life. Run your goals by this test: is this goal something that will help you move closer to your vision of the impact you want to have?

Measurable

Attach a number to the outcome. What is the tangible outcome if its successful? Its important to define this up front, so youll know when you get there! Itll also help you measure your progress along the way, and provide an important motivator.

Particula

Set a project goal thats not vague, like I want more business. Be particular, be specific about what having more business means, e.g., I want 10 more clients, I want 4 larger projects, I want 2 more joint ventures.

Achievable

From where you are now, is this goal a manageable stretch for you? If its a goal that makes you so anxious you become paralyzed and dont take action, its not a meaningful goal. Keep your goals in the discomfort zone, so youll learn and grow. Near the edge of discomfort you can tolerate, but not beyond it.

Clea

State your goal in a way that someone else would understand it. This is a good litmus test for a goal. If you can describe it to someone else, its an IMPACTful goal. Bottom line? Be clear about the outcome that you want.

Time-specific

Attach a timeline to it. Theres some anxiety that goes along with attaching a date. Keep in mind that being time-specific is a lot like plans. They are useful to set, and they may change. So relax a little bit about it, and if you reach your goal a little later because you got one of those large projects, its ok. Just dont make the timeframe so flexible that you dont take action on it.

While this list has elements similar to other goal descriptors, the important distinction here is that IMPACTful goals focus on your impact, the difference you want to make.

Thats crucial. If you ensure that your goals focus on your impact, youll move closer to your impact than youve ever dreamed. Youll be the bigger you who can have that impact.

Two Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants close in Buffalo, New York, USA

Friday, May 11, 2007

At least two Kentucky Fried Chicken [KFC] restaurants, operated by G & H Restaurant Specialties, have closed in Buffalo, New York “for remodeling,” according to signs placed on the front doors of at least one location on Elmwood Avenue and Bryant Street in Buffalo. The other KFC is located on East Delavan Avenue, also in the City of Buffalo.

Despite the claim of closing for remodeling, the Erie County Health Department says that several health code violations were found at both locations. The most recent violation was logged by the health department in March at the Elmwood location for failing to keep food stored at correct temperatures. Violations were also cited for failing to keep cooking supplies and equipment sanitary and for not supplying hot water to the bathroom for employees.

G & H Restaurant Specialties has not released a statement regarding the violations, but the corporate offices in Louisville, Kentucky for KFC said, “our franchisee has finalized a plan for some structural repairs… The units will be temporarily closed while these building maintenance issues are addressed. [They will be] re-opened as soon as the repairs are complete.”

The health department also gave violations out to the East Delevan store for failing to maintain a clean floor throughout the restaurant and for not stopping food from becoming contaminated. Several rat traps were also found inside the storage cooler and around the kitchen area, but the establishment was “not free of rodents,” said Commissioner of the Erie County Health Department, Dr. Anthony Billittier.

Billittier also said that caulking and traps were seen on the outside of the East Delevan restaurant, which was an attempt to keep the rats out. “It shows that they’re trying to take care of a problem. But it also shows that they have a problem.”

As of Thursday, May 10, 2007, the Elmwood KFC has yet to reopen. It is not known if the East Delevan location opened today or not.

Metropolitan Police to sell New Scotland Yard

Wednesday, October 31, 2012

The Metropolitan Police — the police force for the Greater London area — has announced they may sell their headquarters, New Scotland Yard, in order to cut costs.

They are trying to reduce their £3.6 billion annual budget by £500 million, following cuts by the coalition government. If the sale of New Scotland Yard goes ahead, the Metropolitan Police would move to a new location on the Embankment in the Curtis Green building, formerly the site of Cannon Row Police Station.

Other proposals have been raised including selling off other property assets and closing police counters during off-peak hours, but officer numbers are to be maintained.

New Scotland Yard famously has a three-sided rotating sign that turns 14,000 times per day. John Tully, chairman of the Metropolitan Police Federation, which represents the interests of police officers, said it is “regrettable” that an “iconic building like New Scotland Yard is going to bite the dust”. Tully also noted there will be relocation costs.

Brazilian environmentalists tell residents to urinate in shower to save water

Wednesday, August 5, 2009

Environmentalists in Brazil are urging the country’s residents to urinate in the shower while washing themselves, to help conserve water and save the rainforest. Television ads being aired in the country claim that by doing so, the nation could save over 1,000 gallons of water per household each year.

SOS Mata Atlantica ran the ad campaign in an attempt to use comedy to get people to reduce the amount of water they use. “[The ad is] a way to be playful about a serious subject,” said Adriana Kfouri, a spokesperson for Atlantica.

The animated ad narrated by children shows people, including a trapeze artist, an alien and dancers, all taking a shower while at the same time, urinating in it. The ending of the ad then states, “Pee in the shower! Save the Atlantic rainforest!”

Ken Livingstone, former mayor of London, England, proposed a similar campaign in 2006. He said urine should be classified as a “green waste” and that “there is no earthly reason that you need to flush the loo if you have merely urinated. That’s a huge saving of water.”

Diabetic Diet Sample 5 Ways To Control Your Blood Sugar With Your Diet

By Larry Donaldson

Diabetes is a serious disease that can be traced back to problems with the body’s ability to produce or use insulin properly. Specifically, people with Type 1 diabetes are not able to produce insulin, while people with Type 2 diabetes are unable to properly use their own insulin. If untreated, the disease results in the person having high blood sugar levels that are unhealthy.

In addition to controlling the disease through insulin injections (as needed), diabetics also need to strive to use their diet to maintain as near to normal blood sugar levels as possible. Other important factors for health in a diabetic are keeping blood pressure and cholesterol at healthy levels, as well.

If you are looking for a diabetic diet sample, here are 5 ways to control your blood sugar:

1. Go light on the alcohol:

Make sure to go very light in terms of your consumption of alcohol. The reason for this is that it is processed within the body in a way very similar to how fat is processed. It contains almost as many calories as does fat. Be sure to avoid drinking at times when your blood sugar level is normal.

2. Have a colorful plate:

Having a color plate, of course, refers to eating a wide variety of foods. This means fruits, vegetables, meats and other forms of protein such nuts, fish or fish oils, dairy products and whole grains.

3. Eat high-fiber foods:

Fiber is a strong ally of diabetics. Make sure that your daily diet includes high-fiber foods like whole grain breads, cereal, fruits, oats, barley, psyllium, and beans. You should aim for about 30 grams of fiber each day. Especially if you have Type 2 diabetes, a high-in-fiber diet can improve your blood sugar and your cholesterol levels.

4. Go light on the sugary foods:

Both sugar and its cousin, carbohydrates, in excess are not conducive to a smart diet when you have diabetes. And, if you do eat something sugary like a piece of cake, make sure that you then avoid (or substitute) eating something else from the carbohydrate category that would have eaten. In other words, sugars and carbohydrates should be substituted for each other when you are planning your daily diet, and both count toward your daily carbohydrate budget. Also, be sure to adjust your insulin dosage if you have eaten extra carbohydrates that day.

5. Try the TLC diet:

Diabetics who also have abnormally-high cholesterol levels should get to know the TLC diet. It was designed to reduce your consumption of nutrients that raise cholesterol levels. To follow this diet:

* maintain your fat consumption at 25-35% of your total daily calories

* eat few or no saturated fats

* polyunsaturated fats (such as liquid vegetable oils) should make up about 10% of your total daily calories consumed

* monounsaturated fats, such as those found in veggies like plant oils and nuts, should make up 20% of your total caloric intake

* carbohydrates should make up about 50% of your daily calories

* consume about 30 grams of fiber each day (see above)

* protein should make up about 15-20% of your total daily calories

* take in less than 200 milligrams of cholesterol each day

Consider this diabetic diet sample as 5 ways to control your blood sugar and remain healthy.

Traces of radiation found where Litvinenko ate

Saturday, November 25, 2006

Traces of radioactive material that apparently killed former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko were found at restaurants where he met other spies just before falling ill and at his home, Scotland Yard said Friday.

Litvinenko, a former KGB agent who was investigating the death of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya suddenly fell ill on November 1. In interviews, he stated that he had met with two former KGB officials earlier in the day, and then had had lunch at Itsu, a sushi restaurant on Piccadilly in London. He died two days later at the age of 44.

“Traces of Polonium-210 were found at the Itsu sushi restaurant in Piccadilly, the Millennium Hotel, Grosvenor Square, and at Mr. Litvinenko’s home in Muswell Hill, London,” Scotland Yard said in a statement. “We are not prepared to discuss further.”

Roger Cox, head of the HPA’s radiation protection branch, confirmed that the radiation was found in Litvinenko’s body.

“A large quantity of alpha radiation from polonium-210 was found in the urine of Mr. Litvinenko”, Cox said, adding that it was “unlikely” that the radioactive material came from natural sources.

Litvinenko, in a statement written before his death and read Friday, accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of being behind his murder, a charge Putin denied.

“You may succeed in silencing one man but the howl of protest from around the world will reverberate, Mr. Putin, in your ears for the rest of your life,” Litvinenko said in his statement.

Doctors all around the world have been explaining to the media how harmful Polonium-210 can be to a person.

“Only a very, very small amount of polonium would need to be ingested to be fatal, but that depends on how pure the polonium is,” said Dr. Mike Keir, a radiation protection adviser at the Royal Victoria Infirmary.
