UK PM’s speechwriter awaits sentence

Wednesday, August 29, 2007

An English lawyer has pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice. He faked a legal judgment and sent it to a father who was pleading in Taunton family court to be able to remain involved in his child’s upbringing. The lawyer, London barrister Bruce Hyman, now awaits his sentence. The judge indicated that he could receive a prison sentence. Bruce Hyman is well-known in media circles, having produced The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy on BBC Radio. He also produced a series with Clive Anderson, at Above the Title Productions, called Unreliable Evidence.

The father, a former City financier, had attended a series of court hearings in order to make suitable arrangements to see his child following an acrimonious divorce. Shortly before one of these hearings he received an email, ostensibly from a self-help group to which he belonged, which had attached a Court of Appeal case that appeared favourable to an application he had made for the judge to stand down from the case. The father, who was representing himself, duly showed the case to the judge. At this point, Bruce Hyman, the lawyer representing the former wife, claimed to the judge that the case was a forgery, which indeed it turned out to be.

After confirming that the self-help group had not sent him the email, the father then embarked on some detective work his own. The fraudulent email was traced via its header to a dial-up internet connection and a phone number belonging to a shop in London. The shop was able to recover CCTV footage which showed a man sending the email from an Apple laptop. The man turned out to be Bruce Hyman.

Sentencing of Hyman is due in Bristol Crown Court on the 19th of September.

Virgin Media investors want to discuss company’s strategy

Tuesday, May 15, 2007

Virgin Media announced weak results last week, in part due to competition from Sky. Virgin Media lost 47,000 customers from January to March 2007, while Sky gained 51,000 customers in the same time period.

Franklin Mutual Advisers, which has 9.4% of the Virgin Media shares (Sir Richard Branson owns 11%) wants to have a meeting with Virgin Media about its “strategic direction, corporate governance and management”. Franklin Mutual Advisers is known to take great interest in the companies in which it invests.

This has caused many of the other investors of Virgin Media to demanding meetings with the management of the company. The demands are due to confusion among shareholders at the direction in which the company is heading, The Guardian reports. After the attempt to buy ITV was stopped last year, the shareholders think that Virgin Media may lose its battle with Sky and TalkTalk.

Another issue causing concerns amongst investors is the £25.2 million pay cheques for the top seven executives of Virgin Media. Virgin Media reported a £15.3 million loss last year.

IBEX satellite releases first all sky map

Sunday, October 18, 2009

NASA’s IBEX (or Interstellar Boundary Explorer) satellite, released into orbit last October, has provided the data for the first “all sky map” showing the boundary between the Solar System and Interstellar Space. IBEX mapped the sky using two sensors, gathering information about the particle structure within the Milky Way. This map should help researchers better understand relationships between the Sun and our Galaxy.

The particles which IBEX looks for are energetic neutral atoms, atoms with a neutral charge that release large amounts of energy in most directions. The best place to find these particles is in the Sun’s Heliosphere, where forces from outside our solar system interact with the Sun’s magnetic field, causing these particles to become highly energetic. Two sensors on IBEX detect and catalog this. After six months of repeating this cycle over the entire night sky, IBEX acquired enough data to create the all sky map.

This map goes beyond the capacities of the Voyager missions, giving an insight into the Sun’s interaction with the rest of the galaxy. As Cosmic rays approach the solar system, the heliosphere prevents them from crossing into the heart of the solar system, thereby effectively stopping these harmful rays from reaching Earth. This new energy is released from electrically neutral atoms, and when scientists look at the energy given off by these atoms they have a general view of what energy is coming from what area.

Knowing the place in the galaxy where certain rays come from help scientists understand the way our galaxy functions, from star positioning to globular clusters. “For the first time, we’re sticking our heads out of the sun’s atmosphere and beginning to really understand our place in the galaxy,” said David J. Comas of NASA.

Unique Birthday Gift For My Man 5 Tips For Choosing Something He’ll Love

By Marie-Claire Smith

On his birthday, a man likes to feel that he is being celebrated in a big way. Even the most humble of men don’t mind when the people near and dear to him make a bit of a fuss about their birthdays. Meanwhile, those guys we know and love who spend a bit too much time on the ‘it’s all about me’ side of life really love it when someone makes a big deal about their birthdays.

When it comes to making a big splash on a man’s birthday, it is a given that a gift will have to be included somewhere in the mix. A great gift has become synonymous with a birthday going over well.

Your Man Deserves a Thoughtfully-Chosen Gift

Of course, each one of his birthdays is special, but why not make this year particularly so? Spending just a few extra minutes choosing a thoughtfully-chosen gift can mean the difference between ho-hum and ho-hoooo!

The Secret to Finding Gifts Men Like

It’s true that every man is different from all the others. Tastes vary from one guy to the next. However, there is one little secret that will make the birthday gift you choose for him go over extremely well. That secret is this: when you give him a gift, it needs to be immediately apparent that there is a direct connection between your gift and his unique essence; he will know the instant he opens it whether you really ‘saw’ him in the gift when you picked it out for him.

5 Tips for Finding a Unique Birthday Gift

If you are saying, “I need a unique birthday gift for my man,” here are 5 tips to help you choose wisely:

1. Get him something he has been dreaming of: If your man has been talking about some subject, hobby, or area of interest lately – even in an off-handed way – he probably has a keen interest in it. Think back to your recent conversations with him: the clues are definitely there if you know where to look.

2. Focus on his likes, not yours: Remember, it is important to keep in mind that this birthday is all about him, not you. Resist the temptation to buy him a shirt you think he would look good in when he is out on a date with you – or a set of tools he can use to build you that deck you have been wanting!

3. Get him something that both of you can enjoy together: Of course, thinking of him when you choose the gift doesn’t mean you shouldn’t buy him something that that two of you can participate in together. Tickets to a sports game, an overnight stay at a bed-and-breakfast, or a picnic for two might be just the thing to spice up your romantic life a bit.

4. Get anything that combines “fun” and “useful” into one gift: Men, in the end, are very practical people. Sure, he loves all-things-fun, but he will also appreciate something you get him that he can use in some practical way – even if he has no particular use for it just yet.

5. Run your choice by a guy friend of his or yours: As you zero in on just the right gift, share your idea with a guy friend who can give you a ‘yeah’ or ‘nay.’ If he nixes your idea, do not be discouraged: he just did you a favor. Keep looking a bit longer!

Follow these 5 tips to get your man the best darn birthday gift he has had in years. He is sure to show you his appreciation!

Consensus reached on incentive package for Iran

Friday, June 2, 2006

In Vienna, top diplomats from the United States, Russia, China, United Kingdom, France, and Germany reached an agreement on Thursday on an incentive package to offer to Iran in exchange for its giving up uranium enrichment.

The specifics of the incentive package were not revealed, but a delegation from Europe led by European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana is expected to formally deliver the offer to Iran in the coming days. Iran would then have several weeks to respond.

In a prepared statement, British foreign secretary Margaret Beckett said, “We have agreed on a set of far-reaching proposals as a basis for discussions with Iran. We believe they offer Iran the chance to reach a negotiated agreement based on cooperation.”

Beckett did not mention any sanctions to be taken against Iran if it refuses to comply. The United Nations Security Council is expected to take up the question of sanctions should Iran turn down the offer.

The agreement comes a day after the United States offered to participate in multilateral negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program if Iran suspends its uranium enrichment program. Iran agreed to the idea of holding talks but rejected the preconditions.

In the first direct reaction by the Iranian government to the offer, Iranian foreign minister Manouchehr Mottaki said on Thursday; “Iran welcomes dialogue under just conditions but won’t give up our rights,” Iranian state-run television reported. “We won’t negotiate about the Iranian nation’s natural nuclear rights but we are prepared, within a defined, just framework and without any discrimination, to hold dialogue about common concerns,” he said.

US President Donald Trump tests positive for COVID-19

Saturday, October 3, 2020

Very early yesterday morning, the United States President Donald Trump reported he and his wife First Lady Melania Trump tested positive for COVID-19. Officials said the Trumps’ 14-year-old son Barron tested negative as did First Family and Senior Advisors Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump.

Trump took to social media, posting at 12:54 am local time (0454 UTC) on Twitter, “Tonight, [Melania] and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!” Yesterday afternoon Marine One landed on the White House’s South Lawn flying Trump to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) in Bethesda, Maryland.

Reports said both were showing “mild symptoms”. Senior administration officials were tested as people were informed of the positive test. Senior advisor Hope Hicks had tested positive on Thursday.

Presidential physician Sean Conley issued a statement saying Trump has been given zinc, vitamin D, Pepcid and a daily Aspirin. Conley also gave a single dose of the experimental polyclonal antibodies drug from Regeneron Pharmaceuticals.

According to official statements, Trump, now operating from the WRNMMC, is to continue performing his duties as president during a 14-day quarantine. In the event of Trump becoming incapacitated, Vice President Mike Pence could take over the duties of president via the 25th Amendment of the US Constitution. The Pence family all tested negative as of yesterday and there were no changes regarding Pence’s campaign events.

Brazil’s Minas state stops sales of Toyota Corolla

Friday, April 23, 2010

Minas, one of the largest states of Brazil, has stopped the sale of the Toyota Corolla over safety concerns.

The move was made after nine Corolla customers reported that their cars automatically accelerated. The state public prosecutor’s office said in an online statement on Tuesday that the problem is blamed on accelerator pedals sticking underneath floor mats. Local government said the issue was “putting in danger the lives of occupants”.

According to the prosecutor’s office, sales of Corollas may resume when Toyota alters the floormats in its current models. Toyota has recalled over eight million vehicles worldwide due to acceleration problems.
