Marathon runner addresses Toronto, bringing attention to autism

Four months and 3,200 kilometres ago, Canadian runner Jonathan Howard began his run across the second-largest country in the world, to raise awareness for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

A graduate of McMaster University, Howard arrived in Toronto this week, to address the nation’s largest city before continuing his westward run which will take him through all ten Canadian provinces.

Howard was met Monday at a charity barbecue by Senator Art Eggleton. The fundraiser was part of Howard’s strategy to raise 2.5 million dollars to assist families that support children with ASD. “Spectrum is a very puzzling word,” he told the gathering “because there are many types of autism on that spectrum”. The real goal of his RunTheDream.ca charity drive though, Howard explained, was simply to “get people involved in the issue” and generate attention for the little-understood disorder.

Eggleton, who welcomed Terry Fox to the city as mayor in 1980, drew comparisons to the Marathon of Hope runner who became a Canadian icon. While praising Howard’s efforts to raise money and awareness, the senator said he believed that “an awful lot more needs to be done” at the political level to combat the financial and emotional difficulties that face those dealing with autism.

Howard reassured supporters that he still intended to reach Victoria, B.C. before December 31. “The challenges are great,” he confessed “but as long as the determination is greater, anything can be achieved”.

Terry Robinson, a two-time Canadian Paralympic contender born with cerebral palsy, pledged to follow Howard’s journey two weeks ago on its three-month leg from Ottawa to Winnipeg.

Robinson addressed the city, speaking about how his own disabilities left him with an appreciation for how important it was to ensure that people struggling with autism had access to services that could support them.

Tyrus Wong, Bambi artist, dies at 106

On Friday, Tyrus Wong, a Chinese-US painter who inspired the style of Disney animated film Bambi, died at home of natural causes in Sunland-Tujunga, Los Angeles, according to his daughter Kim Wong.

Born on October 25, 1910 in Guangdong province, China, Tyrus Wong left the country with his father at the age of nine under fake names “Look Tai Yow” and “Look Get”. Wong’s father taught him the art of calligraphy using water instead of ink on newspapers.

Wong used to work as a houseboy after school in Los Angeles earning half a dollar per day. Wong’s principal in junior high school helped arrange a scholarship in Otis Art Institute for his art skills. At Otis, Wong studied Western art and graduated in 1935. In 1934, a landscape of Wong’s appeared in an exhibition organised by the Art Institute of Chicago which also featured a Pablo Picasso etching, “Two Nudes”. For two years, from 1934 to 1936, he worked for the Works Progress Administration to create paintings for public buildings.

In 1938, Wong began work in the Disney animation studio as an in-betweener — creating hundreds of intermediate images for the appearance of motion. Walt Disney noticed his work. Wong’s forest paintings of deer strongly influenced the style of Bambi. Wong worked at Disney for only three years before he was sacked in 1941, following an employee’s strike in which Wong did not participate. Next year, Wong became a Warner Bros. concept artist, drawing storyboards and set designs for live-action films. Films he drew concept art for included The Sands of Iwo Jima, Rebel Without a Cause, and The Wild Bunch. After more than a quarter century at Warner Bros., Wong retired in 1968. Wong gained US citizenship in 1946.

Wong influenced animator Andreas Deja, the creator of Lilo from Lilo & Stitch and Jafar from Aladdin. Wong also worked as a janitor, designed greeting cards, and picked asparagus during the lows in his career.

Wong was named a Disney Legend in 2001. Wong is survived by three daughters and two grandchildren.

United States fast-food chain Popeyes Chicken and Biscuits has filed a $20 million dollar lawsuit against competitor Church’s Chicken.

Popeyes Chicken says fast-food chain Church’s Chicken was trying to steal customers.

AFC owned both companies for 12 years, till it sold Church’s in 2004. AFC claims that Church bought all 10 Popeyes restaurants owned by franchisee CVI. Popeyes Chicken says the sale of the 10 restaurants violated its franchise agreement with CVI.

The sudden buy-out in December 2006 led the restaurants to close in early January 2007.

“What Church’s chose to do, I do believe, was not honest competition,” said Ken Keymer, CEO of AFC Enterprises Inc., the parent company of Popeyes.

Church’s spokesperson chose not to comment on the issue.

Mr. Miyagi passes away, Thanksgiving Day

Pat Morita, nee Noriyuki Morita, who was best known for his work in the 1984 film The Karate Kid and its sequels, passed away on November 24. The cause of death is not yet confirmed, but was said to be natural.

Pat started out at a stand-up comedian in the 1960s, and styled himself the “Hip Nip”. “‘Hip Nip’ just sounds groovy,” Morita said “A drummer laid it on me.” His career took off, and he became a regular on the show Happy Days as “Arnold” of “Arnold’s Restaurant” fame. He also acted in the show Mr. T and Tina which was an unsuccessful spin-off of the Welcome Back Kotter series.

However, Pat’s career continued, and he starred in several TV movies including Amos and a 1987-88 made-for-TV police drama called Ohara. Then, for his acclaimed performance in The Karate Kid, he was nominated for an Academy Award.

At his death, Morita had over 100 screen credits, including The Karate Kid sequels, and also as a voice character in the Disney films Mulan and Mulan II. Morita was beloved by many children of the 80s, and remains a popular icon.

Italian Americans have always retained enough elements of their culture to be a very distinctive ethnic group, but they have assimilated well into the culture of the United States since many of them belong to families that have been in the United States for generations.

Many Italian Americans have intermarried with other ethnic groups, but they have been able to retain their distinct cultural identity. They are devoted to their traditional food and drink and have done much to popularize it in the mainstream culture. Italian food can be found all over the United States today which is a testament to its popularity.

Another way in which Italian Americans have been able to influence popular culture is through music. This community is very musical and it is very common for children to be exposed to the arts from a very early age. As a result, Italian Americans have had a very great impact on American popular culture, especially through music and cinema. Many popular singers, right from the 1940s to the present times have been of Italian descent.

The cultural tradition of Italian Americans comes to the forefront during religious festivals of this community which is predominantly Catholic. There are feast days of many patron saints that are celebrated with a lot of gusto in some American cities that have large Italian American populations. These festivals were downplayed for a few decades, but there is now resurgence in interest in them. They are full of sound and color and the smells of delicious Italian cooking and this has proven to be a boon for tourism in the cities that host them.

One cannot neglect talking about the negative stereotypes that this community has had to face in the media and in popular that results from these media portrayals. Italians are normally depicted in movies and television serials as having a criminal bent of mind. If one were to go by these portrayals alone, one would believe that all Italian Americans worked for organized crime. In actuality, organized crime was present in the United States long before Italians arrived here in substantial numbers. At the very least, they are shown as being very loud mouthed and crude.

Italian American cultural associations are now taking on the responsibility of correcting the image of their community in the media and in popular perception. They are very vocal in their objection of negative portrayals of their community. This obstacle apart, the Italian American community is well liked for its role in building the country’s economy. It brings a lot of much needed color and aroma to modern society which tends to be very homogenous.
