Nyc Canoe Club Experiences Smooth Sailing With Steel Roofing System

NYC Canoe Club Experiences Smooth Sailing with Steel Roofing System

by

Brenda Welch

While hundreds of people from the Sebago Canoe Club took paddle in hand this summer to explore the waters of New York City’s Jamaica Bay, Phil Giller and other club volunteers remained on land, seeking shelter from the sun’s harsh rays.

For 75 years and counting, the Sebago Canoe Club located in Canarsie, Brooklyn has served as a cultural, educational and recreational resource for New York City small boat enthusiasts. Members have access to a clubhouse and club boats, boat storage, instruction programs in sea kayaking, sailing, and flatwater racing and a cabin on Lake Sebago in Harriman State Park. But until this past summer, members did not have access to a sheltered area to perform necessary work and maintenance on the boats to keep them ship shape.

More than 100 boats are stored on the club’s property in 16 shipping containers that are each 44 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 8 feet high and spaced 20 feet apart. “It just made sense for us to find a roofing system that would fit between two of the shipping containers to create a workroom that we needed to maintain and fix our boats,” says Giller, who is a member of the club’s board of directors.

Because the Sebago Canoe Club is a volunteer run, 501C3 nonprofit, membership organization, Giller says monetary resources are limited for these types of projects. He and other members scoured the Internet in search of a quality custom-built steel roofing system that would stand the test of time at a cost that fit within the club’s budget.

“We found SteelMaster Buildings, and I called them to see if they could help us,” says Giller, who is a carpenter. “They were phenomenal – their engineers drew up the plans and added gutters and made the arch a foot higher to give us the space we needed. They made sure that the plans met all city and state codes and sent us a stamped copy of the drawings which we have to have since the club is a New York City park. I was extremely impressed with SteelMaster’s customer service and the quality of their product.”

All SteelMaster arch panels are precision cold formed from high-quality Galvalume TM Plus coil stock and manufactured to specifications of exacting form and fit. Each arch panel has a 7 1/2″ depth corrugation and a cross corrugation depth of 1/4″, which provides superior strength that increases with the gauge of the steel utilized. All SteelMaster panels are pre-cut, die-punched, and designed to overlap and align perfectly with each adjacent panel. This translates to fast, simple, and economical construction time. Bolt holes are punched 7″ apart down each seam with a double row of holes at 9″ overlap at every connection. The cross corrugations are eliminated at the overlap to create a weather tight seal. The triple seam overlap arch section to arch section has a minimum 1″ overlap on each of the three faces.

“We did the work of putting the roofing system together ourselves over the course of four weekends, and we didn’t have any problems at all,” said Giller. “The installation instructions are on the SteelMaster website, and they were easy to follow. I was initially worried that because our budget was so small for this project we wouldn’t be able to find a great product and great customer service – but SteelMaster proved us wrong.”

Polaroid goes bankrupt

Friday, December 19, 2008

Camera company Polaroid has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States. The firm, famed for the introduction of instant photography, says alleged fraud by the founder of their parent group is to blame.

Owned since 2005 by Petters Group Worldwide, Polaroid says that the group’s founder Tom Petters is “under investigation for alleged acts of fraud that have compromised the financial condition of Polaroid.” Authorities believe Petter, currently in police custody, was running fraud worth £3 billion, something he denies.

Petters Group, itself, filed for bankruptcy in October. Both firms now face restructuring, which Polaroid is confident won’t affect daily operations — in fact, the company is “planning for new product launches in 2009,” and claims to have “entered bankruptcy with ample cash reserves sufficient to finance the company’s reorganization under Chapter 11.”

Polaroid has further said that employees will be paid without interruption, and that while members of Petters Group are under investigation for fraud, Polaroid’s management is not. The company, based in Minnesota, also has subsidiaries which will enter bankruptcy with it.

A Real Review Of Unicity Mlm Opportunity The Bios Life Franchise Unicity Is It For You?

By SANDRA ESSEX

While doing my research for this Unicity review I found that the Unicity MLM health company has been gaining steady credibility and respect in the nutritional supplement market partly due to the efficacy of their products.

But also due to their partnership with some of the worlds leading research institutes, which include The Angeles University foundation Medical Centre, Stanford University, The Cleveland Clinic, University of Texas, The University of Washington, etc.

These partnerships in turn have given this MLM company access to some of the worlds best medical professionals, nutritional scientists, researchers, and other experts.

For over 15 years, Unicity has been manufacturing nutritional formulations based on the latest medical and nutritional sciences. Their products target key areas important to womens health.

The Products are both extensive and specific, covering such areas of health as Weight Control, Digestive Health, Skin Care, Anti-Aging, Hair Care, Vitamins and Minerals, and more.

Bios Life and Bios Life Slim are two of the companys most popular products. Bios Life is a formula that helps to stabilize blood sugar levels. Its effectiveness has been clinically proven. And Bios Life Slim, a new product from Unicity, has also been cinically proven to melt away belly fat and generally lowers cholesterol.

Bios Life Slim is based on the scientific premise that as we age, metabolism resets in such a way that it becomes harder and harder to lose weight. Thus, by targeting two of the greatest risk factors for heart problems at the same time, this product is widely regarded as revolutionary, the first of its kind in over 30 years.

Cardiovascular disease is still the leading cause of death in developed countries, killing more women than the next 6 causes combined.

And studies show that the vast majority of individuals are favoring nature-based formulas over orthodox medications. There is so much interest in Bios Life Slim for example, that most MLM distributors whove been in the business for some time are actually amazed at how a single product appears to have turbo-charged their businesses.

Unicity MLM opportunity affords network marketing distributors the opportunity to own and operate a part of the business by way of franchising. It is called the Unicity Bios Life Franchise.

Distributors can choose to own the franchise on either part-time or full-time basis. Either way, it is an opportunity to own your own MLM business and earn anywhere from $500 to $5000 or more each month, depending on your own efforts. And unlike the traditional franchise ownership, Unicity franchise comes cheap.

In the face of the current financial meltdown where layoffs are common, and life-time employment now part of history, building one’s own financial security through franchising is definitely a smart way to reactive to the new economic realities.

In addition: It affords you the opportunity to be in charge of your own financial destiny, perhaps for the first time in your life; you are entitled to all the tax benefits of owning your own business; you work from the comfort of your home, and at your own pace. And in the case of this MLM company, you have access to over 100 sought-after products to market.

Virtually all who are financially secure today are individuals who at some point in their lives decided to take a decision and work for themselves. The truth is that even without being laid off from our jobs, the vast majority of us are not getting rewarded enough for our hard work.

Yes, despite working several jobs each day, most can barely keep up with expenses. Not that employers are cheating people. The thing is that paid employments are just not designed to make anybody rich.

Have you ever pondered this question: how many of the worlds richest people are employees? Now youre getting the point. Making up your mind

to work for yourself, maybe part- time at first may be the most important and wisest decision youve ever taken in your life.

Banned film ‘The Profit’ appears on Web

Sunday, March 23, 2008

Copies of The Profit, a 2001 film blocked from distribution in the United States due to a court injunction won by the Church of Scientology, appeared on the Internet Friday on peer-to-peer file-sharing websites and on the video sharing site YouTube.

Directed by former film executive Peter N. Alexander, the movie has been characterized by critics as a parody of Scientology and of its founder L. Ron Hubbard. Alexander was a Scientologist for twenty years, and left the organization in 1997. The film was funded by Bob Minton, a former critic of Scientology who later signed an agreement with the Church of Scientology and has attempted to stop distribution of the film. Alexander has stated that the movie is based on his research into cults, and when asked by the St. Petersburg Times about parallels to Scientology and L. Ron Hubbard said: “I’ll let you draw that conclusion … I say it’s entirely fictional.”

The film was released in August 2001, and was shown at a movie theatre in Clearwater, Florida and at a premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in France. A Scientology spokesman gave a statement at the time saying “the movie is fiction and has nothing to do with Scientology”. The Church of Scientology later took legal action in an attempt to stop further distribution of the film. The Church of Scientology claimed that the film was intended to influence the jury pool in the wrongful death case of Scientologist Lisa McPherson, who died under Scientology care in Clearwater, Florida.

In April 2002, a Pinellas County, Florida judge issued a court order enjoining The Profit from worldwide distribution for an indefinite period. According to the original court injunction received by Wikinews, the movie was originally banned because the court found that it could be seen as a parody of Scientology. In his April 20, 2002 ruling on the injunction, Judge Robert E. Beach of the Sixth Judicial Circuit Court in Pinellas County, Florida wrote: “…an average person viewing the film entitled The Profit could perceive that it is a parody of the Church of Scientology”.

“To the extent that any person considered as a potential juror in evaluating any issues involving the Church of Scientology, the process of voir dire provides a fair and complete remedy to eliminate any potential juror that may possibly have been influenced to be less than fair and impartial,” added Beach.

Luke Lirot, the attorney for the film’s production company, announced on the film’s website on April 7, 2007 that “We have absolutely no exposure for any repercussions from the court order,” but that the film was still blocked from distribution due to an ongoing legal battle. Lirot wrote: “all that’s stopping the release of the movie is the legal battle with the partner who was compromised by Scientology (Robert Minton) and is currently using his power as partner to stop the release of the film.”

In an October 2007 article, The Times described the film as “banned in the US because of a lawsuit taken out against it by The Church of Scientology,” and Russ Kick’s The Disinformation Book of Lists included the film in his “List of 16 Movies Banned in the U.S.”. An 8-minute teaser segment from The Profit appeared on the film’s website and on the video sharing site YouTube in February 2008, and an attorney representing Bob Minton sent a letter to Luke Lirot requesting that the film clip be taken down. In a response letter, Lirot wrote that “Rather than damage any asset of the LLC, the short clip merely keeps the film in the public eye, and in a positive way.”

On Friday, copies of the film began to circulate on peer-to-peer file-sharing websites and on YouTube. A link related to the film’s appearance on the Internet on the community-based link aggregator website Digg.com had 3,638 “Diggs” – and hit the front page of the site’s Entertainment section on Saturday.

I had nothing to do with this release at all. But I’m happy it’s out there.

On Saturday, Scientology critic and Emmy award-winning journalist Mark Bunker put a streaming version of the film on his website, www.xenutv.com, and encouraged others to watch and discuss the film on a real-time chat channel. In a video posting to YouTube Saturday, Bunker said “I did not do it. I had nothing to do with it … I had nothing to do with this release at all. But I’m happy it’s out there … people are finally having a chance to see it. A lot of people have been curious over the years and there’s been a lot of interest in seeing the film, so finally you can.”

We have all wanted to see this movie that scientology kept hidden away from us. We have all wondered just how damning could this story be that we were banned from watching it.

On the newsgroup alt.religion.scientology, a poster by the username “Alexia Death” commented on the film’s appearance on the Internet in the context of censorship: “It is out! And so it is a WIN if many people review it even if they say it SUCKS! … Being bad is no cause to allow censorship … And being censored is no cause to assume its good”. A post to the blog Blogsreel commented: “We have all wanted to see this movie that scientology kept hidden away from us. We have all wondered just how damning could this story be that we were banned from watching it.”

In a post on Sunday to the message board attached to the official website for the film, attorney Luke Lirot asked that individuals stop distributing copies of The Profit over the Internet. Lirot wrote: “It has been brought to my attention that several unauthorized transmissions and downloads of this protected work have taken place over the last 72 hours. Such actions are copyright violations and are unlawful. I request that any further distribution and/or dissemination of this important work cease immediately and any copies of the work that have been downloaded please be deleted.” In his statement, Lirot recognized the rights of individuals under the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, but also said that unauthorized distribution of the film “will only serve to harm the goal of vast distribution”.

Blog postings have attributed the film’s appearance on the Internet as part of the anti-Scientology movement Project Chanology organized by the Internet-based group Anonymous, but this has not been confirmed. Wikinews previously reported on international protests against Scientology which took place as part of Project Chanology on February 10 and March 15. A third international protest by Anonymous is scheduled for April 12. Titled “Operation Reconnect”, the third international protest will focus on highlighting Scientology’s practice of disconnection.

‘Serious’ terror threat in Mumbai; police hunt four suspected militants

Monday, December 27, 2010

A police official in Mumbai has warned four suspected militants of Pakistani origin have entered the city, the capital of Maharashtra, India, and claims they are plotting attacks in the city. Police are now searching for the four people, thought to be members of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), the Islamic fundamentalist militant group the Indian government holds responsible for the coordinated attacks which hit Mumbai in 2008. Joint police commissioner Himanshu Roy says intelligence suggests “the threat is serious.”

A United States counter-terrorism official said the attacks are likely imminent, and will occur over the Christmas and New Year period. “There’s no question LeT remains interested in pulling off another large-scale attack in India,” the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity, “and we are alert to the possibility that LeT might again try a holiday attack.”

Speaking at a press conference, Roy said “[t]hey have recently arrived in Mumbai. We are not in a position to reveal their nationalities now but they are LeT members.”

There’s no question [Lashkar-e-Taiba] remains interested in pulling off another large-scale attack in India

Armed police have been posted around high-profile destinations in the city, and roads around the Taj Mahal Palace hotel—seiged by militants in the 2008 attacks—have been closed. Police have released a sketch of one of the militants believed to be in the city.

“The police [are] on high alert all over the city. We cannot take any of these intelligence inputs lightly in the holiday season,” another Mumbai official said. “Since yesterday, we are checking all the possible hideouts, small lodges and guesthouses, railway stations. We are checking all the vehicles that are coming into the city.”

166 people died and hundreds more were injured in the 2008 attacks, in which multiple gunmen attacked the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station, a hospital, a police station, and numerous hotels, amongst other sites. The attacks were dubbed “India’s 9/11” by local media. Only one militant survived the attacks, Ajmal Amir Kasab; in May this year he was sentenced to death by hanging, on 86 charges, including murder, terrorism, and waging war against India.

New Jersey files lawsuit against federal sports betting ban

Wednesday, March 25, 2009

A New Jersey state senator has filed a lawsuit seeking to overturn a federal law banning sports betting in 46 states.

State Sen. Raymond Lesniak, a Democrat representing portions of Union County, filed the suit Monday, arguing the 17-year-old law is unconstitutional because it treats four states differently than the other states.

Under the law, sports betting is prohibited in all states except Delaware, Oregon, Montana and Nevada, although only the latter two currently allow wagering.

“This federal law deprives the State of New Jersey of over $100 million of yearly revenues, as well as depriving our casinos, racetracks and Internet operators of over $500 million in gross income,” Lesniak said in a statement to the press.

The 39-page lawsuit is believed to be the first challenge to the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992. New Jersey missed a 1994 deadline that would have allowed it to join the other states when the law was implemented.

Atlantic City officials and their political allies have argued allowing sports betting would give all the states a new source of revenue needed in the face of a staggering recession.

New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine was not involved with the lawsuit, but he said legalizing sports betting would help Atlantic City and said it was “worth pursuing”.

Legalizing sports betting in New Jersey could bring the state more than $50 million in annual tax revenue, according to officials from the Interactive Media Entertainment & Gaming Inc., a Washington, D.C.-based consultant for the electronic gaming industry, which joined Lesniak as a plaintiff in the lawsuit.

“This is about more than revenue,” said Joe Brennan Jr., chairman of Interactive Media Entertainment. “It’s about jobs and economic activity.”According to 1999 study, $380 billion in illegal sports betting occurs in the state each year.

New Jersey, in particular, is facing a difficult budget season, and the Atlantic City casinos are in what the Associated Press called a “financial meltdown”. Eleven of the city’s casinos suffered their biggest revenue decline in 30 years last month.

Delaware is reported to be considering regulating sports betting, which New Jersey backers of the lawsuit said adds a sense of urgency to the issue.

“We cannot afford to be naive about illegal sports betting,” New Jersey State Sen. Jeff Van Drew said in a statement to the press. “It’s happening right now, and is funding other criminal enterprises which are far more dangerous.”

The New Jersey Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association, the Thoroughbred Breeders Association of New Jersey and the Standardbred Breeders & Owners Association of New Jersey were also listed as plaintiffs in the lawsuit.

A Guide To Becoming A Better Punter

I fired up my laptop that evening and began checking out these sites. As as it happens, there are plenty of websites ready to take your money, allowing you to bet on AFL basketball, tennis, horse racing, motor sports, you name it. They also have kite racing! After spending a few months checking out the different websites (and losing money), Ive come to value those few websites which go further than simply offering a location to bet. Finding a website that offered bonuses like betting tips, blog posts that summarize coming matches or sports-related innovations truly transformed things for the better. Some of the information you can certainly get from there is awesome, the most recent instance has been that the winner of the screen guild best director wins the oscar for best director 58 times out of 60. I enjoy having the selection of choices and I particularly appreciate having access to tips. An online betting site that offers more than simply a way to place bets gets my vote. You should check out these important capabilities in prospective partners.1.Inside MailTips certainly are a essential componet of an online betting agency. You don’t need to have to hunt around town hunting for the good oil, it needs to be easy.2.InsightsV8 super cars are a good example. Saturn moon Enceladus may have salty ocean

Thursday, June 23, 2011

NASA’s Cassini–Huygens spacecraft has discovered evidence for a large-scale saltwater reservoir beneath the icy crust of Saturn’s moon Enceladus. The data came from the spacecraft’s direct analysis of salt-rich ice grains close to the jets ejected from the moon. The study has been published in this week’s edition of the journal Nature.

Data from Cassini’s cosmic dust analyzer show the grains expelled from fissures, known as tiger stripes, are relatively small and usually low in salt far away from the moon. Closer to the moon’s surface, Cassini found that relatively large grains rich with sodium and potassium dominate the plumes. The salt-rich particles have an “ocean-like” composition and indicate that most, if not all, of the expelled ice and water vapor comes from the evaporation of liquid salt-water. When water freezes, the salt is squeezed out, leaving pure water ice behind.

Cassini’s ultraviolet imaging spectrograph also recently obtained complementary results that support the presence of a subsurface ocean. A team of Cassini researchers led by Candice Hansen of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Arizona, measured gas shooting out of distinct jets originating in the moon’s south polar region at five to eight times the speed of sound, several times faster than previously measured. These observations of distinct jets, from a 2010 flyby, are consistent with results showing a difference in composition of ice grains close to the moon’s surface and those that made it out to the E ring, the outermost ring that gets its material primarily from Enceladean jets. If the plumes emanated from ice, they should have very little salt in them.

“There currently is no plausible way to produce a steady outflow of salt-rich grains from solid ice across all the tiger stripes other than salt water under Enceladus’s icy surface,” said Frank Postberg, a Cassini team scientist at the University of Heidelberg in Germany.

The data suggests a layer of water between the moon’s rocky core and its icy mantle, possibly as deep as about 50 miles (80 kilometers) beneath the surface. As this water washes against the rocks, it dissolves salt compounds and rises through fractures in the overlying ice to form reserves nearer the surface. If the outermost layer cracks open, the decrease in pressure from these reserves to space causes a plume to shoot out. Roughly 400 pounds (200 kilograms) of water vapor is lost every second in the plumes, with smaller amounts being lost as ice grains. The team calculates the water reserves must have large evaporating surfaces, or they would freeze easily and stop the plumes.

“We imagine that between the ice and the ice core there is an ocean of depth and this is somehow connected to the surface reservoir,” added Postberg.

The Cassini mission discovered Enceladus’ water-vapor and ice jets in 2005. In 2009, scientists working with the cosmic dust analyzer examined some sodium salts found in ice grains of Saturn’s E ring but the link to subsurface salt water was not definitive. The new paper analyzes three Enceladus flybys in 2008 and 2009 with the same instrument, focusing on the composition of freshly ejected plume grains. In 2008, Cassini discovered a high “density of volatile gases, water vapor, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, as well as organic materials, some 20 times denser than expected” in geysers erupting from the moon. The icy particles hit the detector target at speeds between 15,000 and 39,000 MPH (23,000 and 63,000 KPH), vaporizing instantly. Electrical fields inside the cosmic dust analyzer separated the various constituents of the impact cloud.

“Enceladus has got warmth, water and organic chemicals, some of the essential building blocks needed for life,” said Dennis Matson in 2008, Cassini project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

“This finding is a crucial new piece of evidence showing that environmental conditions favorable to the emergence of life can be sustained on icy bodies orbiting gas giant planets,” said Nicolas Altobelli, the European Space Agency’s project scientist for Cassini.

“If there is water in such an unexpected place, it leaves possibility for the rest of the universe,” said Postberg.

British Airways Flight 38 investigation focuses on fuel system

Saturday, January 26, 2008

Investigators examining the wreck of British Airways Flight 38, a Boeing 777 that crash landed short of the runway at London’s Heathrow Airport in the first hull loss of a 777, are examining the aircraft’s fuel system as a possible factor in the crash. No-one was killed as the scheduled flight from Beijing, China lost power during final approach on January 17.

136 passengers and 16 crew were on board when power was lost to the two Rolls-Royce engines about two miles from the runway, at a height of 600 feet. Autopilot and autothrottle were engaged at the time, the latter having just commanded an increase of thrust to the engines when power was lost. Co-pilot John Coward, in control at the time, was subsequently praised for being able to glide the disabled plane to within 1,000 feet of the runway, clearing a number of houses along the way.

Subsequent investigation has revealed that not only did the engines not fail simultaneously, but neither failed completely, contradicting initial belief. A preliminary report by the United Kingdom’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) stated that after the autothrottle commanded more thrust “The engines both initially responded but after about 3 seconds the thrust of the right engine reduced. Some eight seconds later the thrust reduced on the left engine to a similar level… Both engines continued to produce thrust at an engine speed above flight idle, but less than the commanded thrust.” This situation prevailed until impact.

On Wednesday the AAIB stated that they were examining “All possible scenarios that could explain the thrust reduction and continued lack of response of the engines.” However, it also went on to specifically mention attention to the jet’s fuel system, saying “This work includes a detailed analysis and examination of the complete fuel-flow path from the aircraft tanks to the engine-fuel nozzles.” The AAIB also ruled out the plane having completely run out of fuel, stating that there was “adequate fuel” in the tanks when the plane crashed. In addition to the fuel required to get to the target destination or emergency alternative airport – whichever is further – aircraft typically carry between thirty and forty-five minutes worth of extra fuel as a safety margin.

Possible scenarios being examined include fuel contamination, coming either from fuel taken on at Beijing or leakage from an unknown source. In particular, a heavy contaminant at the bottom of the tanks would explain a lack of earlier problems on the flight, as the fuel levels would only have become low in the final stages of the trip. Another possibility is that a central part of the fuel system developed a leak, reducing the amount of fuel available to the engines.

It is known that, according to the AAIB, “the autothrottle and engine-control commands were performing as expected prior to, and after, the reduction in thrust,” suggesting that all software in the aircraft was functioning correctly and rendering a software failure unlikely, although this possibility also remains under investigation.
