IRA assets worth 30 million pounds investigated

Thursday, October 6, 2005

The British Assets Recovery Agency is investigating £30 million / €44 million of assets believed to be owned by senior members of the Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA or IRA), using information provided by the Irish Criminal Assets Bureau and British and Irish law enforcement agencies. The money is believed to represent a small fraction of the wealth obtained by the organisation. This move follows the recent decommissioning of IRA weapons. Most of the assets are believed to have been owned by the IRA chief of staff, Thomas Murphy and businessman Dermot Craven. Now that negotiations over weapons decommissioning are over, it is believed that other IRA members who have become rich through running protection rackets or other criminal activities may also be stripped of their illegal assests in the forthcoming weeks.

Irish Justice Minister Michael McDowell said: “An Garda Síochána and the PSNI (Police Service of Northern Ireland) and the Criminal Assets Bureau and the ARA are co-operating in every possible way to ensure that on this island those who have control of the proceeds of crime are deprived of those proceeds”. Businesses and organisations paying money towards protection rackets are hoping that the structure of the IRA will now begin to unravel.

Deadly illegal sexual enhancement products appear on the Singaporean market

Friday, April 11, 2008

New ‘deadly’ sexual enhancement products have been found in Singaporean markets and can cause serious side effects on users.

The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) announced the presence of the illegal drugs, known as Power 1 Walnut, Santi bovine penis erecting capsule, Zhong Hua Niu Bian and fake Cialis, which have been discovered over the past 3 months. Santi bovine penis erecting capsule has been found to contain high amounts of glibenclamide, a potent drug used to treat diabetes. The tablets also contain sildenafil and tadalafil – potent western medicines used to treat erectile dysfunction. Zhong Hua Niu Bian also contains sildenafil and glibenclamide.

High consumption of the tablets can be potentially deadly as the glibenclamide in the capsules can lead to drastically reduced blood sugar levels which can lead to seizures, stroke, coma or death. Consuming half of a Power 1 Walnut capsule has led to unconsciousness and frothing at the mouth.

Consumption of Power 1 Walnut has led to the death of a middle age man last week who fell into a coma. Currently, one death and two cases of coma have been reported from the total of 89 hospitalised cases linked with the consumption of the illegal drugs. It has been revealed that patients obtained the drugs by purchasing them from illegal peddlers located in various parts of Singapore.

The HSA has advised people to stop consuming the drugs and to report on any cases of consumption to them.

What To Expect During A Tower Climbing Training Course

byadmin

Working at heights can be very dangerous. It only takes one misstep, and you can be seriously injured, and even killed. One very dangerous job which is preformed at great heights is a job which requires you to climb a tower. There are some towers which are thousands of feet in the air. Before you get a job climbing a tower, you should take a Tower Climbing Training course. These courses are designed to give you the skills necessary to skills to remain safe of the tower, and evaluate any hazards and control them when you are working on the tower.

What Do These Courses Involve

Most Tower Climbing Training courses teach using three different tools. There are a variety of multi-media presentations, lectures, and hands-on workshops.

Program Topics

Most training courses cover the same basic topics. These include:

* Fall prevention and protection: This will teach you how to prevent a fall, by teaching you to always know where you are standing.

Standard regulations: You will learn what is required by OSHA and ANSI

You will learn about using anchors and anchor connectors which are required when working on a tower.

You will learn how to properly connect devices and harnesses.

To work on a tower, you need to use speciality systems, such as vertical lifelines, controlled descent systems, and ladder safety climbing systems. You will learn how to use each of these.

You will learn about hazard regulations, how to evaluate them, and how to control them.

Industry hazards are very important to understand. At a tower climbing course, you will learn about the types of tower structures, clothing that should and should not be worn, weather considerations, and what to do in the event of falling objects.

Rescue is a very important part of the class. You will learn how to pre-plan a rescue, and what you should do if you are the victim in need of rescue. You will also learn to use rescue equipment, and rescue techniques in the event that a co-worker needs help.

Working high in the air, on a tower, is a very dangerous job. Before you begin working on a tower, most companies require you take a tower climbing certification course. This course will not only benefit your employer, it will also benefit you and your co-workers as well.

Australian government provides $15.8 million for North Adelaide Technical College

Tuesday, June 27, 2006

Australian Minister for Vocational Education and Training, Gary Hardgrave has announced the government will provide AU$15.8 million to establish an Australian Technical College in North Adelaide. The minister said the government was entering into a partnership with the Archdiocese of Adelaide and consortium of industrial and manufacturing companies.

The North Adelaide college will be located in Elizabeth and be operated as an independent non-government school. The college is one of 25 to be established across the country.

Enrolments at the college will begin in 2007 and will offer courses in areas where identified skills shortages exist in the North Adelaide region, specifically – engineering, construction, electronics and cooking.

Mr Hardgrave said that the proposed college had been popular among the North Adelaide business community. “This important initiative has been well received by North Adelaide business and industry, and will help to address skills needs and provide opportunities for those in greatest need, including a lot of Indigenous students in the region,” Mr Hardgrave said.

“The fact that this College is being led by local employers, local government and other key stakeholders, means it will be truly industry and community driven,” he said.

Australian Technical Colleges were established to cater for year 11 and 12 students who wish to do an apprenticeship as part of their school education.

The Australian Education Union has expressed a number of concerns about the model put forward by the government. In a report, they claim that trade facilities at TAFE colleges (operated by state governments) will deteriorate as funding is diverted to the ATCs. The union is also concerned that ATCs are supposed to be selective VET schools. According to the union they will have selective entry and preferential funding. It is feared that teachers will be lured away from schools and TAFE colleges to higher paid positions in ATCs.

The Education Union suggested that the government invest in schools that already offer vocational education programs.

Ontario, Canada celebrates Family Day

Monday, February 18, 2008

On Monday, February 18, many people in the Canadian province of Ontario are to get a new holiday from work and school.

Under new legislation passed shortly after their re-election in October, the provincial Liberal government under Premier Dalton McGuinty introduced the statutory holiday, called Family Day, to be celebrated on the third Monday of every February, starting this year.

“There is nothing more valuable to families than time together. And yet it seems tougher than ever to find, with so many of us living such busy lives,” McGuinty was quoted as saying in a press release.

“That’s why, on the third Monday of this coming February — and every February from now on — Ontarians deserve a new statutory holiday — Family Day.”

Due to the haste in which the holiday was introduced, courts were forced to reschedule cases booked before the holiday was approved. In Toronto, hundreds of drivers will receive an unexpected holiday from their traffic tickets as courts there have cancelled hundreds of minor cases.

The Canadian capital of Ottawa, Ontario is home to thousands of federal workers who are regulated under national rather than provincial labour laws, therefore Ontario’s Family Day holiday does not apply to them. Meanwhile, management at the city’s Rideau Centre mall was surprised to learn that a tourist-related exemption that normally allows their stores to open does not automatically apply for newly-introduced holidays such as Family Day.

An estimated 40% of Ontario workers will not receive more time away from work due to Family Day due to various exemptions, or because their work is not under provincial jurisdiction. Meanwhile, many businesses complain of extra costs incurred because of an extra statutory holiday.

Ontario joins the province of Alberta and Saskatchewan in celebrating a Family Day on the third Monday of February. The holiday coincides with Manitoba’s Louis Riel Day, celebrated on the same day starting this year. South Africa and the Australian Capital Territory (“Family and Community Day”) have yearly Family Days on other dates.

Crane Forks

Submitted by: Camille Howe

Easy Rack crane forks come in a number of specialized tine model designs that allow you to move almost anything on a pallet with your crane. A number of key design features ensure safety and stability during loading and moving of materials. The self shifting, spring loaded pickup trolley built into each unit keeps both forks level when empty. The pickup trolley also maintains a focused center of gravity to keep the payload level during transport.

Other design features makes these crane forks ideal for a wide range of loading and moving requirements. The king post can be adjusted for load heights ranging from 48 on the low end to 68 on the high end. The adjustable stop allows crane forks to handle 36 , 40 , and 48 pallets. To stabilize the load, a 40 wide backstop provides support from behind. To handle exceptionally broad loads, crane forks can spread up to 40 apart.

Easy Rack sells three different types of crane forks custom designed for different tasks. Before we take a look at these models, however, it will help you better understand the advantages and benefits of these tools to look at the general features that they all share.

1. For one thing, all crane forks are forged to prevent them from breaking under stress and tapered to make them easier to insert into pallets and packages.

2. The vertical post of every unit features built-in handles that allow workers to grip and guide crane forks into the load.

3. The pickup trolleys on these units can accommodate 5 ton hooks.

4. When the load is being carried, the fork tips tilt slightly upward to prevent them from sliding off.

5. When the load is released, the spring returns the trolley to the empty position.

6. To properly operate the trolley, always load a minimum of 500 to 750 lbs.

7. Never attempt to unload materials from a suspended pallet.

General Purpose Tines For Moving Standard Pallets are the design model most commonly used on construction sites. These crane forks are the best choice when you have a wide variety of materials that need to be lifted off the ground by a crane and moved. Measuring 46 each in length, they can easily handle standard 48 pallets.

Block Tines are made especially For Masonry Work and Bonded Block. Use these crane forks not only with pallets, but with a wide range of masonry supplies such as brick. (Sliding the forks together enables them to pick up loads of brick. They are ideally suited, however, to picking up and moving cubed and banded block.

Brick Tines are the best tool to use when moving packages of bricks that are not on pallets. These crane tines are made especially for picking up and moving 40 packages of bricks. The tines themselves measure only 39 for a special reason. This one inch difference keeps the end of the tine inside the brick package being moved and prevents it from protruding through to the other side and snagging other packages packed closely together. The forks themselves measure only 3 wide by 1 thick and are easy to get into the small openings of brick packaging.

Salmonella outbreak sickens over one thousand in United States

Thursday, July 10, 2008

Over 1000 cases of illness have now been identified in a foodborne salmonellosis outbreak that began in mid-April 2008 in the United States.

As of July 8, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported 1013 confirmed infections throughout the United States, along with four cases in Canada. 203 hospitalizations have been linked to the outbreak. It has caused at least one death, and it may have been a contributing factor in another. The pathogen responsible is the rare Saintpaul strain of Salmonella enterica.

Nearly half of the reported illnesses were in Texas and New Mexico. According to unnamed sources close to the investigation, most illness clusters in the outbreak involve Mexican restaurants. Illness clusters in the hard hit state of Illinois were publicly identified by local health departments as involving three Mexican restaurants.

The CDC is in the process of investigating the outbreak and trying to identify the contamination’s point of origin. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) currently suspects that the contaminated food product is an ingredient in fresh salsa, such as fresh jalapeño pepper, fresh serrano pepper, fresh cilantro, or certain types of raw tomato.

Some produce industry insiders doubt that fresh produce is to blame for the outbreak. They point to the absence of Salmonella on all of the tested produce samples to date, as well as divergent results from produce tracebacks. They also say that the extended time frame of new sicknesses makes it unlikely that either raw tomatoes or fresh jalapeños, the government’s two main suspects, could be responsible. Will Steele, President and CEO of Frontera Produce, said that “the outbreak is probably related to processed goods and they’re looking in the wrong closets.”

Steele’s Texas based company has been forced to hold shipments of fresh jalapeño peppers after loads of produce were repeatedly flagged by the FDA for testing. Although independent testing of both loads showed no sign of Salmonella, the peppers are still on hold until the FDA finishes its own testing of the second load flagged on July 1st. “There are still no results,” Steele says. “The salability of that produce in two to three days is gone. We ceased harvesting. There is no sense in bringing in more product and having it rot.”

Steele, like others in the produce industry, believes that the FDA should be focusing on processed produce instead of fresh produce. “Methodology is backward,” he says. “FDA is reaching for answers. You can’t tie jalapeño pepper shipped on June 30 back to April 10.”

Still, the FDA and the CDC consider testing of fresh jalapeños and other fresh produce a high priority. The CDC writes that “the accumulated data from all investigations indicate that jalapeño peppers caused some illnesses.”

The FDA is cautioning that people who would be in the most danger if infected with Salmonella (infants, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems) should avoid eating the suspected types of produce listed on their website.

Bangladesh security tightened following Pilkhana massacre and Bashundhara City fire

Friday, March 20, 2009

Following the Pilkhana massacre which occurred February 25 and 26 leaving 74 dead and the inferno at the Bashundhara City shopping mall complex March 13 leaving seven dead, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said security measures are being tightened countrywide across Bangladesh.

Fire drills will be enacted at all key-point installations (KPI). Fire fighting systems will be examined by the fire brigade and the public works department (PWD) to ensure functionality. Security measures will be enhanced supplementing areas under private security such as at the Bashundhara City Complex.

The Fire Service and Civil Defence Department requires modernization and needs new equipment to fight fires past the sixth floor of buildings. The Fire Brigade says it needs turntable ladders, snorkels, foam-tenders, lighting units, emergency tenders, fireproof uniforms, and rescue ropes for fire fighting and rescue operations. Transportation to fires is also an issue due to narrow roads, low electrical wires and congestion.

The Bangladesh National Building Code requires fire fighting equipment installed in buildings over seven floors. This code is to be monitored by authorities to ensure compliance with the new guidelines and to make sure buildings are being maintained.

The Bashundhara City Complex opened Monday for shoppers two days after Friday’s blaze. A probe is underway to determine the cause of the fire and to assess structural damage.

Loss of life was minimized as the blaze broke out on a Friday, the beginning of the weekend in Bangladesh, so offices in the upper floors were empty. The lower eight floors are used for shopping and the upper floors are all Bashundhara Group offices.

The mall is valued at Tk 7.0 billion (US$100 million). It is not known if the complex is covered by fire insurance.

It is estimated that it will take over two years to rebuild the area damaged by flames which were burned down to a skeleton. Bashundhara City’s technical advisor, Latifur Rahman, estimated damages at Tk 2.0 billion (US$29m).

Only one television cameraman has been allowed in to film the burnt area. None of the 2,500 shops, cinemas or cafes were burnt by the inferno. The seventh and eighth floors still experience smoke damage, and there was water damage to merchandise.

A three member committee is currently investigating the cause of the fire which will consist of Iqbal Khan Chowdhury, joint secretary of the ministry, representatives of the police, IGP Noor Muhammad, and fire brigade, Director General Abu Nayeem Md Shahidullah. The committee is required to report within the week with their findings. The forensics department is also sifting through the burnt remains.

The Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industries has also formed a committee which has begun interviewing witnesses and recording their testimony alongside the government committee.

It has been discovered that 150 closed circuit cameras were not being used when the fire started. Another mystery is why the mall fire fighting system has been found unused.

Why the fire burnt so fiercely is a matter to think….These matters seem to be mysterious

“In the shopping mall there is an ultra-technology elevator which runs even without electricity but we have found that locked,” Iqbal Khan Chowdhury, joint secretary (Police) of the home ministry, said. “Why the fire burnt so fiercely is a matter to think. We have to see if there was any incendiary substance there. These matters seem to be mysterious.”

Mall management has been asked to submit substances and items which would have been in the upper floors when the fire started. The fire erupted on the 17th floor and spread quickly to the two floors above and engulfed the three floors below. The aerial ladders belonging to the Fire Service and Civil Defence reached as high as the 13th floor of the 21-storey building.

Videos have been sent to the United States (US) for examination to assist in determining the cause of the fire and to help in the damage assessment. Experts from the US are expected to arrive soon.

Firefighters were brought to the rooftop of the 20-storey tower by helicopter. The only fatality in this operation was Baki Billa, a firefighter of Bashundhara City firefighting department, who fell when climbing down a rope from a helicopter to the roof of the building. Three other firefighters made the transition safely. At this same time, the chief security officer was safely rescued by the Bangladesh Air Force helicopter, a Bell 212. Six security officers of the complex also lost their lives.
