Rhode Island borrows $90 million from US for jobless claims

Thursday, October 1, 2009

Rhode Island will receive US$90 million in funding from the United States federal government to support unemployment benefits in the state.

Rhode Island’s Department of Labor and Training stated on Wednesday that it requested the line of credit because the account utilized to provide funding to unemployed individuals in the state had decreased to only $2 million; enough to last only a few days.

Unemployment insurance customers will not experience any delays in receiving their weekly payments.

In a statement released by the Department, the agency said: “Unemployment insurance customers will not experience any delays in receiving their weekly payments.”

Unemployment in Rhode Island was 12.8 percent in August 2009 – the third-highest rate in the United States. During the first eight months of 2009, Rhode Island’s state unemployment insurance trust fund has provided over $300 million in unemployment benefit funding.

In addition to Rhode Island, 20 other states have outstanding balances on money they borrowed from the Federal Unemployment Account of the United States Department of Labor. Rhode Island has an outstanding balance of approximately $90.68 million due to the account. The loans are interest-free until December 2010.

Monday, June 7, 2010

An acrobatic group known by the name of Spelbound has been declared as the winner of Britain’s Got Talent 2010, a televised variety talent show competition broadcast on ITV in the United Kingdom. As the winning act of the show, Spelbound have won £100,000 (US$144,580, €120,313, A$175,079) and a place at The Royal Variety Performance, an annual gala evening that is attended by senior members of the British Royal Family.

In no particular order, the top three acts were revealed to be two dancers known by their stage name of Twist and Pulse, gymnastic group Spelbound and Kieran Gaffney, whose act involves playing on the drum kit. After Kieran Gaffney was revealed to be in third place, Anthony McPartlin, who hosts Britain’s Got Talent with Declan Donnelly, said to Kieran: “Well done Kieran. Kieran, you’re a star, you came back, you got all the way to the final. I know you’ve loved this. You’ve loved this, haven’t you?” In response to this, Kieran Gaffney stated: “Thank you very much. Thank you, everyone for supporting me. Thank you.”

Shortly afterwards, on the episode that was broadcast live on ITV1 on Saturday, Anthony announced: “After tens of thousands of auditons, five semi-finals and an amazing final, this…this is it. One of you is about to walk away with £100,000 and a place at this year’s Royal Variety Performance. The winner of Britain’s Got Talent 2010 is…Spelbound!” Glen Murphy from Twist and Pulse commented about finishing in second place, stating: “Yeah, it’s amazing. I can’t even believe it. I can’t believe it at all.”

Alex Uttley, a 24-year-old member of Spelbound, commented on the gymnastic group’s victory, commenting: “Oh, my god. This is unbelieveable. We just want to say thank you to everyone out there. It just shows that all our hard work has paid off.” One of the coaches of Spelbound, named Neil Griffiths, stated about Spelbound: “Oh, they’ve worked so hard over the last few weeks. Um, since the semi-final, we…we really had to pull out the stops to try and up the game. They’ve not known they’ve worked in the gym from six in the morning till twelve…twelve o’clock of the night. I couldn’t have asked for more. Um, it’s a team of coaches. I don’t take all the credit myself. There’s, uh, two people up there that know who they are who’ve been fantastic.”

Spelbound consists of 24-year-old Alex Uttley, Nicholas Illingworth, aged 24, Adam Buckingham, aged 21, 20-year-old Adam McAssey, 19-year-old Douglas Fordyce, 18-year-old Edward Upcott, 18-year-old Leighanne Cowler, 17-year-old Katie Axten, 17-year-old Lauren Kemp, 15-year-old Jonathan Stranks, Abigail Ralph, aged 15, 13-year-old Hollianne Wood and Amy Mackenzie, aged 12. Bookmakers had previously predicted that Spelbound would be the most likely act to become the winner of the series.

The running order for the final started with Twist and Pulse. The second act to perform was Liam McNally, a 14-year-old singer. The running order subsequently continued with 40-year-old impressionist Paul Burling, singer Christopher Stone, aged 28, Tina & Chandi, a woman and dog dancing act, Connected, a five-piece singing group, Kieran Gaffney, aged 12, 22-year-old Tobias Mead, a dancer, 80-year-old singer Janey Cutler and Spelbound in that particular order.

Earlier on in the final, Britain’s Got Talent judge Amanda Holden has stated to Spelbound: “We are hosting the 2012 Olympics and I think ‘what a brilliant opening act’.” Fellow judge Piers Morgan also commented that “[t]he purpose of this show is to identify hidden great British talent. You are that act.” After Spelbound won in the final, another judge, named Simon Cowell, stated that “the right boys and girls won on the night” and that he could “only say on live TV that that was one of the most astonishing things I have ever seen. Seriously.”

Power Point To Video Your Final Power Point Presentation}

PowerPoint to video – Your final PowerPoint presentation

by

DaisyNow it’s time for us to think a little different for our presentation! You can do your final presentation with Acoolsoft PPT2Video Converter http://www.ppt-to-video.comWhat video formats we are talking about?A Video refers to recording, manipulating, and displaying moving images, especially in a format that can be presented on a television. Video formats are confusing because most video files have at least two different types: the container and the codec used inside that container. I’ll list some common video formats that we often used :AVI (.avi): Most commonly contains M-JPEG (especially from digital cameras?) or DivX (for whole movies), but can contain nearly any format (not Sorenson).Sometimes you’ll see a reference to the “fourcc”: this is a four-character code (such as “divx” or “mpeg”) inside the AVI container which specifies which video codec is being used.QuickTime(MOV): Most often used for the locked Apple Sorenson codec, or for Cinepak (free), but can also hold other codes such as mjpeg, etc.WMV (.wmv): More or less MPEG4; can contain nearly any codec, including several Microsoft spinoffs of MPEG-4 which vary in their freedom and licensing requirements.ASF (“Advanced Streaming Format”, .asf): a subset of wmv, intended primarily for streaming: an early Microsoft implementation of an MPEG4 codec.MPEG (“Moving Pictures Expert Group”): three video formats, MPEG 1, 2, and 4.MPEG-1: Old, supported by everything (at least up to 352×240), reasonably efficient, most used in VCD.MPEG-2: A souped-up version of MPEG-1, with better compression.720×480.Used in HDTV, DVD, and SVCD.MPEG-4: A family of codecs, some of which are open, others Microsoft proprietary. A good format for the web.MPEG spinoffs: mp3 (for music) and VideoCDDisadvantages of PowerPointPowerPoint presentation can work only on computer having Windows Operating system and Microsoft PowerPoint installed in it. Also there are some problems due to system version conflicts. Your PowerPoint presentation is not going to work because of incorrect operating system version.Don’t worry, here is a solution. You can convert PowerPoint to video, it can be played on any operating system.and it is your final presentaion.Still confused? Take a look at advantages of converting PowerPoint to videoFirst of all, you know that PowerPoint can only be played on PC with Microsoft PowerPoint installed, and sometimes it must be the right PowerPoint version with right operating system, if any of them has problem, your PowerPoint presentation plan can become a deadlocked, but if you convert PowerPoint to video formats, you don’t need to worry about it, since video formats can be played on any PC or Mac system. Where video is played means your PowerPoint can be shown. The next thing is many gadgets like iPod, iPhone, Zune support certain video format; you can import the converted PowerPoint video presentation and then view your PowerPoint presentation on them. Some famous websites like YouTube are support video upload, which gives you a way to share your PowerPoint presentation with others!Besides, if you want to protect your PowerPoint from others edit, you can convert them to video and sent to others, what they can do is just watching!I only list some of the advantages, I think there should be more, explore yourselfFree way for Converting PowerPoint to videoBill Gates didn’t provide plug-in into Microsoft PowerPoint, which can convert PowerPoint into video. You should be aware of some top software, which can do this job for you and that too at free of cost. Yes, this can be done for free but it’s tricky. Here are steps for doing so:- Save all PowerPoint slides in JPG format.- Now make video by importing all images to Windows Movie Maker.Disadvantages of free ConversionThere are some disadvantages after converting PowerPoint into video, which are given below:*All animation is being gone from presentation, thus resulting into dreary presentation with no charm at all.*Moreover, presentation doesn’t contain audio anymore and it takes lots of pain to add audio into video. These all points bring home the fact that when your slideshow presentation doesn’t contain any animation, video or audio clips then this conversion can be helpful to you, else it may not solve your problem. Here are some principles that may be helpful to you in conversion. How to converting PowerPoint to video:1.The first method is to play slideshow on your screen and to record it at the same time with screen recording application like Wondershare DemoCreator. But I want to suggest one thing regarding screen recorder that while conversion you will not be able to do any other job and you need to open PowerPoint each time. Also there are chances of loosing animation, audio tracks etc. One more disadvantage is that you cannot convert all PowerPoint pieces at same time.2.The Second method is using software available on various website. You can find lots of software application for PowerPoint conversion to video and also promising of providing best quality output. But you need to find the best one, so our suggestion is to take free trail prior to purchase. Friday, July 6, 2007

London is preparing for Le Grand Départ of the 2007 Tour de France. The route, which will run through the Greenwich Millennium Village, is being prepared for the Départ. The Tour de France will be in London and the South East for the two days of the 7th and 8th of July. The event will start in Trafalgar Square at 15:00 BST (UTC+1).

“I believe this will be the most spectacular Grand Départ the Tour has ever seen and the weekend will underline London’s great sporting reputation,” said Ken Livingstone, mayor of London.

The parts of the Tour that London will be hosting are the Prologue and Stage One. The Prologue will be on Saturday, the 7th of July, starting in Trafalgar Square at 15:00 BST and finishing at 18:20 BST. Stage One will be on the following day, starting in Greenwich at 11:00 BST and finishing in Canterbury, Kent.

Over the years the Tour de France has seen 52 British riders; the first being Charley Holland and Bill Burl in 1937. Londoners may get to see today’s riders on their two wheels, but they will be followed by 1,500 vehicles, 13,000 policemen and women patrolling the route and 2,300 members of the world press.

During the event many roads will be closed along the route and off it. The official website provides detailed information.

Sarkozy appoints François Fillon as Prime Minister of France

Thursday, May 17, 2007 File:Francois fillon1.jpg

The new President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy has appointed François Fillon to head the new French government. Fillon’s predecessor Dominique de Villepin stepped down yesterday, and formally handed over the post during a ceremony today.

The nomination did not come as a surprise after the British newspaper the Financial Times had reported on May 8 that Sarkozy had introduced Fillon to Tony Blair in a telephone conversation.

François Fillon (53) has been the political advisor of Sarkozy in the UMP for the past 2 years, and he was Sarko’s campaign leader during the recent presidential elections. Fillon has experience in negotiating with the trade unions, having undertaken controversial reforms of the 35-hour workweek and the pension system. Sarkozy in his inauguration speech on Wednesday reiterated his plans to reform the French labour and social system, and Fillon will have to oversee these reforms as the new Prime Minister. Sarkozy said he wants to make the economy more flexible and lessen social tensions.

I expect I’ll end up being the first French premier with a Welsh wife.

The Guardian reported that Fillon is an Anglophile; his wife Penelope Clarke, with whom he has 5 children, was born in Wales. Ideologically, Fillon is being described as a moderate left-leaning member of the conservative UMP party.

Fillon had his first experience as a minister in 1993 when he became Minister for the Higher education and Research under PM Édouard Balladur. He later became Minister for the Post office, Telecommunications and Space, then Minister for the social Affairs, Work and Solidarity, and finally Minister for national Education, the Higher education and Research. At the university, he studied public law and political sciences.

Sarkozy might announce his cabinet of 15 ministers as early as Friday, half of which are going to be women, he said. Fillon will lead the UMP in the parliamentary elections next month. A poll on Wednesday predicted a 1.5% increase in votes for the UMP, up to 40%, compared to 28% status-quo for the allied socialists.

Reports say that Sarkozy has offered the foreign minister post to Bernard Kouchner, co-founder of Médecins Sans Frontières, who is seen as being on the left in French politics.

1 million people welcome 2007 in Sydney

Monday, January 1, 2007

A crowd of approximately 1 million has welcomed the new year in Sydney overnight. Many of the crowd had camped out since 6 AM AEDT (7PM UTC) to ensure they had the best vantage point for the fireworks displays at 9 PM and 12 AM. Earlier predictions of rain failed to dampen enthusiastic revellers and fortunately did not eventuate.

According to police, vantage points were Circular Quay and Sydney Opera House closed around 7 PM.

This year’s theme was “A diamond night in Emerald City” and celebrated the Sydney Harbour Bridge’s diamond anniversary of 75 years which will fall in March.

As usual, the bridge became the centre piece of Sydney’s celebrations with a question mark turning into a coat hanger during the 9 PM fireworks show before a diamond appeared at 11 PM.

Entertainment was held in the city throughout the day, culminating in a spectacular fireworks display at midnight. Revellers counted down the final seconds of 2006 with numbers on the side of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

The festivities are estimated to have cost AUD $4 million and organisers claim their fireworks display is “the largest in the world”. Sydney’s celebrations were broadcast on television live around the world as other countries prepared their New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Despite the large crowd, police made only 58 arrests for offences including offensive conduct, stealing, assaulting police, goods in custody, assault, drink driving and affray.

Ambulance officers were called to 1,139 incidents in Sydney with another 900 in country areas.

Finding Super Golf Swing Tips That Work

Finding Super Golf Swing Tips That Work by Helen HeckerYes it’s hard to believe but there are more than 27 million golfers in the world today. It’s important to remember, your golf swing is what drives your score; not your clubs or ball. Many golfers play golf just to hack around and have some fun; more avid players are always looking for ways to improve their golf swing and their overall game. It’s been proven that thinking positively about bettering your golf game will benefit you more than playing to compete with your partners and trying to win for winnings sake. Visualize where you would like the ball to land, as you swing. Overall, you generally want to play golf with confidence. Swing slowly and steadily using a nice rhythm. Trust your golf club to do the job it was intended to do. Accomplished golfers purposely use sidespin to steer their ball around obstacles or towards the safe side of fairways and greens. When you swing if you have problems with your left knee buckling, imagine you’re holding a soccer ball between your knees. The backswing is a rotation to the right, consisting of a shifting of the player’s body weight to the right side, a turning of the pelvis and shoulders, lifting of the arms and flexing of the elbows and wrists. As the body matures, the ability to rotate the upper torso is affected by age, and the hand action can also slow down requiring a slightly stronger grip.Sidespin occurs when the clubface is not aligned perpendicularly to the plane of swing. Use the basic ‘hitchhiker’ position when you’re working on your backswing. Before you swing, make sure you’re relaxed; contract all your muscles tightly for a moment and then relax them.Make sure to use the proper technique. At the end of a swing, the weight has shifted almost entirely to the left foot, the body is fully turned to the left and the hands are above the left shoulder with the club hanging down over the players’ back.Once you understand that you can change your swing by using a simple technique, you’ll never underestimate golf fitness again. You can get rid of shoulder problems with some simple techniques. It’s no secret; most of the professional players actively participate in workouts.Ask an expert, who is not associated with the shop you would buy your golf swing aid from, for advice on the right aid for you. Most of all don’t waste your money on a golf swing aid you don’t need or will never use. Be careful about the claims on TV commercials and magazine ads; seek expert advice before you buy because they may not live up to their claims.Golf swing aids can be found online and are often cheaper. If you’re looking for an aid to improve your stance they’re not hard to find. There are a wide range of golf swing aids on the market today to help the beginning and advanced golfer.Keep in mind that with some golf swing aids, you may still need advice or help from an expert. UN Secretary-General expresses concern about crises in Chad, Kenya, Sudan

Thursday, February 7, 2008

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has expressed concern about crises in Chad, Kenya, and the Sudan. The U.N. chief is recently back from Africa where he attended the African Union summit in Ethiopia and met with leaders in Kenya.

On rebel efforts to overthrow the government in Chad in recent days, the secretary-general welcomed an African Union initiative to have the leaders of Libya and the Democratic Republic of Congo mediate the crisis. He says the United Nations will do its utmost to help resolve the crisis, urging the Security Council to act swiftly to help bring an end to the violence.

“It has devastating consequences not only for the people of Chad and Darfurian refugees seeking shelter there, but also for Darfur itself,” said Ban.

Mr. Ban told reporters the situation in the neighboring Darfur region of Sudan is no less troubling. He says the deployment of the AU-U.N. peacekeeping force, known as UNAMID, must be sped up and urged member states to properly equip the troops.

“UNAMID still lacks required aviation and ground transportation – chiefly helicopters. Additional troops will not make up for this shortfall,” said Ban. “Those countries that called for intervention in Darfur are under special obligation to deliver on their promises.”

While at the AU summit, Mr. Ban says he discussed some of the outstanding issues affecting the deployment with Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, and he expects the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) to be signed this week. But Mr. Ban remained vague on whether some of the agreement’s sticking points – such as night flights, land agreements, and advance notice of U.N. movements – had been settled.

On Kenya, Mr. Ban says he has been deeply engaged in the post-election crisis and told political leaders during his visit there that they bear particular responsibility for the future of Kenya.

“I stressed to all the Kenyan leaders the need to stop the unacceptable violence and killings, and to resolve their differences through dialogue and democratic process. I also appealed to all the political leaders to think beyond their individual interests or party lines and to look to the future of Kenya as one country,” he said.

Mr. Ban also met in Nairobi with his U.N. predecessor, Kofi Annan, who is leading the panel of eminent Africans trying to mediate the crisis, and said they discussed his roadmap for the talks.

Security of U.N. personnel in Africa and elsewhere has been high on the secretary-general’s agenda, especially in the wake of the December bombing in Algeria that killed 17 staff members. Mr. Ban announced that he is naming diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi to chair an independent panel on safety and security of U.N. personnel and premises. Brahimi is an Algerian, but Mr. Ban says he has no concerns about his fairness or objectivity in heading up the panel.

Will Wikimedia “run on Sun”?

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

An internal Wikimedia communiqué was leaked over the weekend. Like many e-mails, the document is a chain of forwards, replies, and attachments. The attached Portable Document Format (PDF) file was from a PowerPoint presentation, entitled “Wikimedia Foundation: Past, Present, and Future”. The presentation is watermarked confidential, do not distribute, and details the Foundation’s recent financial, technical, and traffic history, outlines near-term forecasts for all three, and makes suggestions for slightly longer horizons as well. By itself the document led to several inter-connected news stories.
