London, England — Yesterday at London’s Basketball Arena, the Canada women’s national wheelchair basketball team earned their first victory of the London Paralympics when they defeated the Australia women’s national wheelchair basketball team 57–50.

Canada took a one point lead into the second half, when the scores were 33–32 because of a last minute foul that sent Canada to the free throw line where they capitalized by making one of their shots. 4.5 point player Janet McLachlan and 2 point player Katie Harnock dominated in minutes played for Canada during the first half, playing all 20 minutes and leading their team in scoring with 11 first half points for McLachlan and 12 for Harnock. The Canadian team was loudly supported by spectators, earning more cheering from the largely Great Britain supporting fans than the Australians.

The second half saw Canada slowly increase their lead, keeping tied with Australia 4–4 in the first half of third, 6–4 in the last half of the third, 6–4 in the first half of the fourth, and 8–6 in the last half of the fourth. McLachlan finished the game as Canada’s leading scorer with 28 total, 17 in the second half. Harnock had a quieter second half only scoring 2 points to finish with 14. Cindy Ouellett was the team’s third leading scorer, finishing the game with ten.

The Canadian team supported their team from the bench, chanting “Get it out! Get it out!” when on defense and “Let’s go Canada” when on the offense. Other times, one player led the team in chanting support for their players on the court. The team was consistently louder than the Australian bench.

Throughout the game, the Canadians tipped themselves over more in their chairs than the Australians. Ouellett tipped once, and bounced in her chair, with a wheel leaving the ground as she attempted to block shots and steal the ball. Ouellett and Australian Cobi Crispin locked wheels, and required a break in the game where Australia’s coach came on to the court and removed Ouellett’s wheel to detach the pair before putting it back on again.

Following the game, Australia’s Amber Merritt said of playing Canada, “I have the utmost respect for Canada. They’re a great team, but we’ll refocus on the game tomorrow [against the Netherlands] and go out and play like we know we can, the Australian way.”

Prior to the start of the game, McLachlan was the team’s dominating player in the competition. She was ranked eighth in the competition in field goal percentage, and was Canada’a highest ranked player in this category. She ranked second in the tournament in total field goals made per game, with 12. Teammate Katie Harnock ranked eighth. Tara Feser ranked fourth in the tournament for 2 point field goal percentage at 57.1%, while McLachlan ranked ninth with 50.0%. McLachlan was second in 2 point field goals made per game, at 12. Harnock was tied for first with Mexico’s Floralia Estrada Bernal in the competition for 3 point field goal percentage at 20%, and was ranked second in the tournament for most 3 point field goals made with one.

As a team coming into the game, Canada was ranked sixth in total field goal percentage, eighth in free throw percentage, sixth in average rebounds per game, second in fouls, and last in turnovers.

Coming into this game, Canada had lost their first game 70–59 to the Netherlands. They are scheduled to play Brazil today.

Latest trial of the One Laptop Per Child running in India; Uruguay orders 100,000 machines

Thursday, November 8, 2007

India is the latest of the countries where the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) experiment has started. Children from the village of Khairat were given the opportunity to learn how to use the XO laptop. During the last year XO was distributed to children from Arahuay in Peru, Ban Samkha in Thailand, Cardal in Uruguay and Galadima in Nigeria. The OLPC team are, in their reports on the startup of the trials, delighted with how the laptop has improved access to information and ability to carry out educational activities. Thailand’s The Nation has praised the project, describing the children as “enthusiastic” and keen to attend school with their laptops.

Recent good news for the project sees Uruguay having ordered 100,000 of the machines which are to be given to children aged six to twelve. Should all go according to plan a further 300,000 machines will be purchased by 2009 to give one to every child in the country. As the first to order, Uruguay chose the OLPC XO laptop over its rival from Intel, the Classmate PC. In parallel with the delivery of the laptops network connectivity will be provided to schools involved in the project.

The remainder of this article is based on Carla G. Munroy’s Khairat Chronicle, which is available from the OLPC Wiki. Additional sources are listed at the end.

A Primer On Commercial Roll Up Grilles

byadmin

Whether a property is a humble home or a major industrial building, it needs the proper protection. For the average house, a solid door or gate provides a way to ward off criminals. But the commercial sector may need something more extensive than a simple door, especially with so much to guard within its walls. Fortunately, various companies in the door service industry are willing to deliver. Commercial Roll-Up Grilles offer buildings a straightforward yet effective way to guard their innards against danger.

Though they all have the intent to protect businesses, grilles come in several varieties. Models can be made out of one or several types of metals, such as aluminum or steel. By using tempered glass or polycarbonate, each grille gains increased durability and fire resistance. While the common grille’s holes may seem like a liability, they end up boosting the amount of ventilation in an area. In the same vein, open-air grilles allow for light to pass through undeterred, as well as let passerby visually access guarded interiors. Still, companies provide closed variants for buildings that don’t need to show off their wares, as well as offer an extra layer of security.

No matter the make, Commercial Roll-Up Grilles have the versatility to fit the needs of various buildings. Storage facilities, warehouses, and fire stations can all reap the benefits of a good grille. The same applies to buildings with a high amount of traffic, such as schools, malls, and convention centers. Those that plan to have a grille installed outdoors don’t have to worry about weather damage, since a number of the available models are built to withstand the elements.

A wide array of companies in the door industry will lend aid to those who need help with grilles. In addition to selling the products, experts in the field can help with installation of new grilles or maintenance of old ones. As such, ensuring the safety and security of a commercial building is well within the reach of anyone who needs it. Owners will still have to select a grille that suits their building and their needs, but the process may prove worth it in the long run. Concrete Rust Removal Two Ways To Get It Efficiently Done

By Markus Skupeika

Concrete rust removal on garage, kitchen or any other part of your house can be tedious and time consuming. It requires effort, a great deal of patience and sometimes, it also needs some money. And no matter how unlikable it can be, you can not just simply shrug your shoulder, turn your back and enjoy the world without doing something about the building up of rust on your wall, sink and even toilet bowl.

As a human, it is your nature to feel comfortable and safe at a clean place. That is the basic purpose of house cleaning and specifically of rust removal from cement or concrete surfaces. However, rust, in a way, blocks the achievement of a cleaner and safer place to live.

Though there are many rust removal products offering results for your maximum satisfaction, some of them are not actually able to deliver what they claim they can. Worse, instead of keeping your house safe and clean, these rust removers can be a threat to your family’s health. But how can this be?

The answer is simple. Usual rust removers are mostly chemically produced. This means that by using them, you can get yourself and your family exposed to harmful gases or chemical ingredients. Continuous exposure to these chemicals will produce negative effects that can physiologically and sometimes even psychologically produce imbalance.

However, chemical-based rust removers are not the only option available for persistent rust problems. There are two other effective ways of concrete rust removal that you can take. Both are safer to implement as no chemicals are involved on the processes. However, each got its own advantages and the choice of which one will work best depends on your judgment.

The hard but free way…

On this option, you will need something from your kitchen and you will have to do a little squeezing and scrubbing. Nothing to worry though, as what you will need will be just a lemon and a little amount of vinegar. There will be no spending as these ingredients, for sure, are available in your kitchen table or cupboard.

Now, to get this done, cut your lemon in half. Squeeze on the rust stain. Let the juice penetrate the stain and after a few minutes, rinse it with water. If the stain is gone then you’re done. However, if the stain remains, do the same but this time use vinegar. Then just simply scrub the surface and rinse it again.

However, if you are a busy man or woman or simply just someone who prefers a ready-to-use but not chemical-based rust remover, then the next choice of concrete rust removal is definitely for you.

The easy but costs-a-little-money way…

This option requires nothing but a little spending. For a fast and easy way to achieve result for concrete rust removal, you can use Rusterizer. As it is organic, it is safe. To remove rust, all you have to do is to apply it on the surface, with no scrubbing needed.

About the Author: There is no safer way of getting rid of rust than natural rust removers. Choose it over other products to get the best result of concrete rust removal.

Manitoba volunteers go to war against Red River flooding

Monday, April 6, 2009

Over 1,600 volunteers registered to help build approximately 65,000 of the 500,000 sandbags to create dikes 20.5 feet (6.2 meters) high to protect the City of Winnipeg, Manitoba in the war against the Red River of the North flood.

700 volunteers answered at the rural municipality of St. Andrews alone. Once sandbags are filled for West St. Paul, St. Andrews, and Selkirk, then frozen culverts must be cleared.

The height of the river is expected to be Thursday, and predictions are that it will be less than Flood of the Century of 1997. There is no precipitation in the forecast, and snow in the province should be melted by the end of the week.

“The fear right now is we have to get that ice out of the river. The Amphibex [Excavators] are still working and breaking the ice apart, and everyday we buy with the warm weather and the current, it is thinning the ice down a bit, so when it does start to move, the better chance it’ll move right out into the lake,” said Paul Guyder, the emergency coordinator for the RMs of St. Andrews and St. Clements.

“I feel that we’ve done everything humanly possible to get ready,” said Gary Doer, Premier of Manitoba, “But … there are fallibilities with human behaviour. We can take every preventative measure as human beings possible and we can still get Mother Nature proving again she is superior.”

Communities with ring diking will partially or fully close their dikes at the beginning of the week. Provincial officials are considering opening the Red River Floodway gates around mid-week before ice is fully melted.

Ice jams could cause flooding within the city, however opening the gates could spare neighbourhood flooding when the river rises to the estimated 6.3 meters (20.7 feet) height. The province does have back up plans for dealing with ice jams within the city if they do occur. The unpredictability of ice jams and the ensuing water level rise may cause neighbourhood flooding. The city is raising dikes where the river has jammed with ice in the past such as on tight curves and past bridges. Likewise there are excavators and backhoes positioned at these points.

Vulnerable neighbourhoods on the river banks have been reinforced with sandbag dikes at vulnerable areas from the massive volunteer effort over the weekend. Guyader feels no more extra volunteers are needed, however volunteers are still being asked to leave their names and number in case of unpredicted need. Existing personnel will assess roads, and help with clean up.

Approximately 400 of the 800 people who evacuated the Roseau River Anishinabe First Nation have returned to their homes.

Former Premier, Dufferin Roblin, brought forward the floodway as a protection for Winnipeg residents and economy following the 1950 Red River Flood. The Red River floodway, “Duff’s Ditch” was finally finished in 1968, and its floodway gates have been opened 20 times saving Winnipeg from an estimated CA$10 billion in damages. The floodway expansion began in 2005 at a price of $665 million.

Polish and Chinese experts have come to survey the Red River Floodway, and Dennis Walaker, mayor of Fargo, North Dakota recognises the need for Red River flood defences down river. “Every town that you drive by from the Canadian line up to Winnipeg is either elevated or ring-diked,” said Walaker.

Disney buys Pixar

Tuesday, January 24, 2006

The Walt Disney Company has finalized a US$7.4 billion deal to acquire its long-time partner Pixar in an all stock buy-out. The deal will make Steve Jobs, current Pixar and Apple CEO, Disney’s largest shareholder with about 7% (valued at over $3.5 billion) and a member of the board of directors.

The merger was speculated all day Tuesday on the stock market and the announcement came just after trading closed for the day. Terms of the merger include Pixar’s John Lasseter becoming Disney’s new chief creative officer in charge of animation at the combined Disney-Pixar Animation Studios, as well as principal creative advisor at Walt Disney Imagineering, the unit of the company responsible for research and development of Disney theme parks worldwide.

Jobs purchased what became Pixar for $10 million in 1986 from George Lucas’s computer animation division at Lucasfilm. Toy Story, its first feature film, came a decade later, and began a long string of animation hits, including Finding Nemo. Such successes proved to be increasingly elusive for Disney to manage on its own. The partnership between the two studios had become shaky in recent years, as former Disney head Michael Eisner clashed with Jobs over the renewal terms of their agreement. In 2003, prior to his dismissal from Disney, Eisner infuriated Pixar’s creative team by predicting Finding Nemo would be a failure. Steve Jobs broke off negotiations in January 2004, having told one executive previously, “I don’t see how the relationship can continue as long as Eisner is there.”

Ringworm In Dogs And Cats

Have you ever heard of ringworm? It’s actually not a worm at all. Ringworm is a fungal infection that gets its name from the red ring that appears on human skin, and it can affect pets, too. Below, your animal hospital Sarasota, FL tells you more.

Symptoms of Ringworm

The common symptoms of ringworm in pets are crusty or scaled areas of the skin, hair loss, and hair that’s easily pulled out.

Treatment for Ringworm

Your vet will probably prescribe or recommend a medicated shampoo or lotion to bathe your pet with. This kills off the fungal spores to stop the infection. Note that you’ll need to quarantine your pet from other animals in the house, as ringworm is easily transmissible. You’ll also want to wear gloves while handling your pet so as not to get infected yourself.

Prevention Tips

Pets encounter the fungal spores that cause ringworm in their environment. While there’s no guarantee you can prevent your pet from coming into contact with these spores, keeping them away from wild animals and dirty areas is always a good idea. Don’t let your pet roam around outdoors unsupervised.

Former NBA ref surrenders to charges he bet on games he officiated

Wednesday, August 15, 2007

Tim Donaghy, an ex-NBA referee, surrendered today for an appearance in a Brooklyn federal court. Law enforcement officials said that Donaghy allegedly placed his own bets, and also released confidential information to others, including referees’ schedules. Today, Donaghy pleaded guilty to ‘conspiracy to engage in wire fraud’ and ‘transmitting wagering information to other individuals’. These two charges could result in up to 25 years in jail.

Tim Frank, a NBA spokesman, told the Associated Press the league was informed yesterday that Donaghy would plead today but was not given any further information.

Both John Lauro, Donaghy’s attorney, and federal prosecutors did not comment. But, NBA commissioner David Stern said a month ago that the ex-referee’s lawyer told the league Donaghy was contemplating a plea. The plea was made official early today.

Donaghy has been reportedly cooperating with prosecuting attorneys who together are building a case against other people to whom Donaghy may have provided inside information to. It has also been reported that Donaghy had a biased view against the Detroit Pistons, therefore making bets against them, and then calls against them as well

Donaghy today told the court that he had a gambling problem. However, he also said that he was receiving treatment for it.

The Associated Press reports that no other NBA officials or players are suspects in this case.

The FBI contacted the NBA on June 20, 2007 to talk about a referee who was allegedly gambling on games. The FBI and the NBA officially met on June 21. Donaghy resigned from his position July 9, after over ten years as a referee

Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students/LA-ND

See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.
