Airplane in Nigeria crashes during mock rescue exercise

Saturday, March 13, 2010

A Nigerian airplane crashed in the city of Port Harcourt yesterday, resulting in several minor injuries.

The plane was supposed to be taking part in a mock rescue exercise, and was carrying 30 members from the National Emergency Management Agency and other emergency workers, when it slid off the runway and into some bushes after landing at Port Harcourt International Airport.

The rescue workers on the ground, intended to participate in the emergency drill, instead had to deal with a real emergency; however, only a few people on board the aircraft sustained minor wounds.

A spokeswoman for the police, Rita Inoma-Abbey, commented today that “[n]o life was lost, but the aircraft was severely damaged.”

Zimbabwe submits to popular pressure: foreign currencies now legal tender

Thursday, January 29, 2009

Zimbabwe has decided to abandon its currency, the Zimbabwean dollar, in favour of other currencies.

Acting Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa announced today that Zimbabweans will be allowed to make transactions in other currencies along with the local currency. “In line with the prevailing practices by the general public, [the] government is therefore allowing the use of multiple foreign currencies for business transactions alongside the Zimbabwean dollar,” he said, adding that the Zimbabwean dollar will not be removed from circulation and would be used alongside other currencies.

This decision comes during the current period of hyperinflation, which has massively devalued the Zimbabwean dollar. Banknotes up to $100 trillion have been printed, despite the removal of ten zeroes from the currency last summer to try to make transactions easier. The official inflation rate, last updated in July 2008, was 231,000,000% a year, although independent estimates place the number as high as 6.5×10108, or 6.5 quindecillion novemdecillion, percent.

Up to now, only vendors with licenses were legally able to accept foreign currencies, although the practice was widespread — private businesses altogether refuse to accept the unstable Zimbabwean dollar.

Large sections of the workforce, including teachers and doctors, have gone on strike because hyperinflation rapidly renders their wages worthless. Representative groups said salaries, now measured in trillions of dollars, are insufficient to pay for even the bus fare to work.

Zimbabwe also faces other crises, including a cholera epidemic that has claimed the lives of over 3,000 people, according to statistics from the World Health Organisation.

U.S. Senate approves revised bailout package after controversial additions

Saturday, October 4, 2008

The U.S. Senate passed a revised bailout bill designed to help the struggling U.S. financial economy, which has measures nearly identical to the bill rejected by the U.S. House of Representatives on Monday.

“Senate Democrats and Republicans believe it is essential that we work quickly on this important legislation to restore confidence to our financial system and strengthen the economy,” said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

The new revisions include raising the FDIC insurance cap to $250,000, a move designed to please progressives. However, the $110 billion in tax breaks, earmarks and what has been called pork barrel spending is not offset by any increases in revenues and has added opposition to the bill from some Representatives in the House.

Earmarks added into the bailout bill included $192 million in tax rebates for the Virgin Islands rum industry, $148 million in tax cuts for the wool industry, $100 million tax cuts to the auto racing industry, and $48 million in Hollywood tax incentives.

Vice President of Taxpayers for Common Sense, Steve Ellis, offered his explanation for the pork and earmarks added in. “People who support some of these provisions will forget about the $700 billion and concerns they may have on that, and say, ‘If you give me a few million in tax breaks for my constituents, I’ll go along'”.

The tactic seems to have worked, however, managing to flip enough votes to pass the bill.

“The inclusion of parity, tax extenders and the FDIC increases has caused me to reconsider my position,” said Representative Jim Ramstad (R Minnesota), who voted against the previous bill on Monday. “All three additions have greatly improved the bill.”

But Representative Marcy Kaptur (D Ohio) was not changing her no vote. “I will not support this legislation because it’s the wrong medicine,” she said.

The Senate took H.R.1424, a bill originating in the House concerning “equity in the provision of mental health and substance-related disorder benefits under group health plans, to prohibit discrimination on the basis of genetic information with respect to health insurance and employment,” and extended it with the bailout provisions.

H.R.1424 was introduced on March 9, 2007, by Rep. Patrick Kennedy (RI-1) and had the support of First Lady Rosalind Carter. It is noted on the Congressional Website that “On 10/1/2008, the Senate passed H.R.1424 as the vehicle for the economic rescue legislation. In the EAS version of the bill (Engrossed Amendment as Agreed to by the Senate), Division A (pp.1-110) is referred to as the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008; Division B (pp. 110-255) is referred to as the Energy Improvement and Extension Act of 2008; and Division C (pp. 255-441) is referred to as the Tax Extenders and Alternative Minimum Tax Relief Act of 2008.” It was not treated as an appropriations bill in the House.

There were two votes in the Senate. The first was to amend H.R.1424, which required 3/5 to be accepted, which it was. The second was a vote on the bill. Passage of the Bill required only a 1/2 majority. It was passed with 74 yeas and 25 nays. Senator Kennedy did not vote.

Canada pursues new nuclear research reactor to produce medical isotopes

Friday, July 10, 2009

The Saskatchewan provincial government alongside the University of Saskatchewan (U of S) have come together to establish a CA$500 million, 10 megawatts research nuclear reactor to produce medical isotopes.

“In 1949 … cobalt-60 treatment was tried for the first time here in Saskatchewan, where it saved a woman battling cervical cancer. Maybe we can lead again in terms of nuclear medicine,” said Brad Wall, the Premier of Saskatchewan, “Governments should be involved in pure research. We’re dealing with some circumstances as they present themselves”

“We’ve had faculty that are interested in this. We have an issue of national importance, We see a reason why the U of S and the province could assist in this national issue. We see how it could help the country. We see how it could build on the university’s research strength,” said Richard Florizone, U of S vice-president of finance and resources.

The research conducted at the Canadian Light Source Synchrotron on campus would be enhanced by a research reactor.

“In the case of a power reactor, in Saskatchewan we have much better alternatives. In the case of a medical isotopes research reactor, this may be a circumstance where the benefits outweigh the risks,” said Peter Prebble, director of energy and water policy for the Saskatchewan Environmental Society.

The nuclear reactor at Chalk River, Ontario in Canada was shut down on Thursday, May 14 by the Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) due to a leak of heavy water and will not re-open until late 2009 or spring of 2010.

The repairs of the NRU are complex and challenging. “I’ve heard it described as . . . trying to change the oil in your car from your living room. We’re faced with conducting remote investigations in a radioactive environment with high radiation fields, conducting the examinations and inspections through small openings in the top of the reactor and accessing over great distances,” said David Cox, director of the NRU engineering task force.

“The unplanned shutdown of the NRU will result in a significant shortage of medical isotopes in Canada, and in the world, this summer,” said Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health and Lisa Raitt, Minister of Natural Resources.

The Petten reactor in the Netherlands is another of the six extant nuclear reactors globally. It must also be shut down between mid July and mid August.

Medical isotopes are used in diagnostic procedures for cancer, heart disease and other medical conditions. When radioactive isotopes are injected into the body, radiologists can view higher radiation via medical imaging, enabling them to make a more accurate diagnosis.

Audience Response Systems – Interactive PowerPoint presentation

by

Sonal KumawatThe Audience Response System! You must be wondering what it is? You might have used once or many times unaware of the fact that you are using the most versatile technology. As it is quite obvious from the self explanatory name that Audience Response System has to deal with the reactions or responses from the masses or the audiences. It is the interaction between the presenter and his audiences using the multipurpose wireless device with presentation software. The system for remote users which obtains immediate feedback for the host in a synchronous way.An Audience Response System (ARS) is also known as a Group Response System (GRS) or Classroom Performance System (CPS). Imagine! Now no more raising hands till hours and shouting in crowd to give your feedback or get selected. Audience Response System automated the whole System. The audience can participate by selecting the answer they feel is right by pressing the respective key on the respective wireless keypad. Their answer is send to the base station, a centralized system, where data gets collected and the consolidated data is graphically presented to the users. As per the presenter’s requirement the data can be collected anonymously (e.g. in the case of voting) or individually if in case presenter needs to track which user answered correctly (e.g. classroom quizzes). The incoming data from the masses gets stored in the database that is located in the host computer, and the reports can be generated and populate for further analysis and judgment. Its hardware includes two technologies to send data to the base station: Infrared and Radiofrequency. A few companies also offer browser-based software that routes the data via an IP address.Infrared (IR): IR audience response systems are suitable for smaller groups. Radio Frequency (RF): are better suited for large group environments, RF systems do not require line of sight for functioning and can accommodate hundreds of voters on a single base station. Browser-Based: Browser-based audience response systems are still in the early phases of its development.Audience Response Systems are more flexible because for more of it benefits. As I have already mentioned above it eliminated the hands raising and shouting which cause chaos unnecessarily. The few more added advantages are that it improves the attention among the crowd, it increases the awareness and knowledge spreading is comparatively better, display the results fast and accurate, Stores data from polling and can be further retrieved for reports generation and estimation. Paced up the decision making, polling anonymously is one major key feature. Each and every individual’s response can be tracked, improves the host skills. Above all it creates the fun environment and maximizes the participation. The core areas in which Audience Response Systems found its maximum usage are Education and learning, Training held in Corporate, Game shows (e.g.: audience poll in “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire”), Conferences and Events, surveys and research, sales, marketing, polling and voting, Decision makings.I would also like to share research made by Decision Tree Consulting (DTC) over a period of time for Audience Response System. You must be really amazed to know that over 7 million voting handsets has been sold from 2003 to 2006.And again a high percentage of handsets are predicated to be sold.To cope up with the present scenario in the market today for from future prospective some companies are initiating towards software approach of Audience Response System by taking into active use of cellular text messaging network and plug-ins fro application like PowerPoint. This doesn’t require the high tech hardware and are really appreciated by professionals and large meeting halls that do not want to purchase or rent out the Audience Response System hardware. The majority of the upcoming professionals are opting for this multitalented System for presenting their skills in this cut-throat competition. So don’t stay behind and wait. It’s the right time to come forward and ask for more flexible technology you ever had.

Four killed in suspected US drone strike in Pakistan

Saturday, January 9, 2010

Pakistani intelligence officials said today that at least four people have been killed in a suspected US drone strike in the North Waziristan province.

Officials say missiles hit a house and a vehicle near the town Miranshah. The region is near Pakistan’s border with Afghanistan.

“The US drone fired two missiles on a house. The house was completely destroyed,” said an unnamed security official.

The attack comes a day after Pakistani president Asif Ali Zardari warned that US drone strikes were undermining Pakistan’s “national consensus” in his country’s war against rebel groups in the area. However, visiting US lawmakers told Pakistani officials the US could not afford to abandon the controversial missile strikes.

Sen. Larry Craig claims innocent of lewd conduct

Tuesday, August 28, 2007

Sen. Larry Craig held a news conference Tuesday in Boise, Idaho to issue a public statement about his arrest in June, 2007 and subsequent guilty plea, August 8, to a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct.

In his statement, Sen. Craig indicated that when he pled guilty to the charge, two months after the fact, he didn’t understand at the time what he was signing and declared himself innocent of any wrongdoing at the Minneapolis airport on June 11, 2007.

According to the arresting officer, Sgt. Dave Karsnia, who was dressed in civilian clothes at the time of the incident, he was using a bathroom stall when Sen. Craig entered the stall next to his. Karsnia reported the Senator tapped his right foot, and then stretched his foot over to touch the officer’s left foot. Sen. Craig also ran his hand along the bottom of the stall’s dividing wall. According to CNN, that type of behavior is known in the Gay community as a signal that the person wants to engage in lewd behavior. The officer subsequently showed Sen. Craig his badge. Using his other hand, Karsnia directed Craig to move toward the door. After some words and Sen. Craig’s refusal to cooperate with the officer, he was placed under arrest.

An additional charge against Sen. Craig, interference with privacy, had been thrown out. Sen. Craig received a ten-day suspended jail sentence, was fined US$500, and was given one year probation.

Sen. Craig admitted that he did not mention his arrest to the Senate Ethics Committee, which is not required by law, and also didn’t tell his wife and other immediate family members about his arrest until recent days.

Things To Remember While Buying A Used Bike}

Things To Remember While Buying A Used Bike

by

Orange Book ValueIn India, most of the people who are daily commuters prefer to use a bike for their daily commute to work or any other place. So, motorcycles are very much in demand among the vehicle buyers in the country. Furthermore, demand for used bikes are increasing day by day as well-maintained pre-owned bikes are available at very affordable prices in the used bike space. However, there are certain things one should keep in mind while buying a used bike.

As the product belongs to someone else and you do not have any idea about its history, always ask for the service history report of the bike from the seller. This way you would know if the used bike you are going to buy has gone through any major repair or damage. Secondly, do not forget to take a proper test ride before buying a used bike. This way you would get to know how the bike responds and about its overall performance.

It is always better to take a professional mechanic with you while going for the test ride. Any person who has a thorough technical knowledge of bikes will be able to tell you all the pros and cons of the used bike you are planning to purchase. Also, you should check for the authenticity of the factors mentioned by the seller. See if both the mechanicals and the aesthetics are in the same condition as it is described by the seller.

The used bike market in India is seeing a tremendous growth these days as most of the motorcycle buyers are going for used bikes instead of the new ones. This has given a boost to the used bike industry, and now the sellers are also more confident about it. However, sometimes it can be a very tricky task to sell a used bike and there are certain things you need to keep in mind for this.

Firstly, if you want to sell your used bike at a good price, you need to keep it in a very well-maintained condition. In other words, if you value your bike, it will return a good value for your money. Secondly, you should get it checked by a professional mechanic who will examine the bike thoroughly and will let you know the exact price on which you can sell it off. The value of a bike depreciates over the time and there are several factors that contribute to it such as the model of the vehicle, year of manufacturing, trim/variant, the odometer reading that states the kms driven, etc.

There are online websites like Orange Book Value that suggest the fair market value of any bike based on the factors mentioned above. It is recommended that you check the fair valuation of your used bike before quoting a selling price in front of a buyer. By quoting a fair price, you can seal the deal very easily without much of negotiation.

Over 60 illegal miners die in South African mine fire

Wednesday, June 3, 2009

Over 60 miners were killed in an abandoned gold mine shaft near Welkom, in the Free State province of South Africa, after a fire broke out inside the mine.

36 bodies from the Harmony Gold mining company Eland mine shaft were brought up earlier on the weekend from depths up to 1.4 kilometers (1 mi). On Tuesday, 25 more bodies were recovered by other illegal workers.

“We suspect there was a fire on the 18th of May. We never saw any smoke. Over the weekend [30 May] we were informed by other illegal miners that people had died,” said Tom Smith, Chief Operating Officer for Harmony’s South Region, “The bodies are not burnt. It seems more of a case of gas or smoke inhalation. I don’t know if there are any more bodies down there, we just have to wait.”

The workers may have died from poisonous gasses, smoke inhalation, suffocation, cave-ins or carbon monoxide poisoning.

Harmony gold mine will not send anyone in to the mine as the conditions are extremely dangerous and abandoned shafts are without safety equipment. Illegal workers may gain access bypassing security at one mine site, and exit via a series of interconnected underground tunnels many miles away.

Harmony is internationally the fifth largest gold mining company and has bought up old, abandoned mines.

Police were seeking relatives to help identify the bodies, and are instigating an investigation into the circumstances.

Almost 300 “gold pirates” were arrested over the past two weeks at the Eland mine shaft alone. Thousands of illegal workers can be underground, and remain working for weeks and months continuously. “These are ex-miners and unemployed people – we need to target the syndicates,” said Smith.

There are over 4.18 million unemployed in South Africa due to the economic decline, and another 1 million may soon join the ranks.

Susan Shabangu, the minister of mining, extended her condolences.

Welkom, with a population of over 400,000 is located 160 kilometers (99 mi) northeast of Bloemfontein, the provincial capital.
