Disney buys Pixar

Tuesday, January 24, 2006

The Walt Disney Company has finalized a US$7.4 billion deal to acquire its long-time partner Pixar in an all stock buy-out. The deal will make Steve Jobs, current Pixar and Apple CEO, Disney’s largest shareholder with about 7% (valued at over $3.5 billion) and a member of the board of directors.

The merger was speculated all day Tuesday on the stock market and the announcement came just after trading closed for the day. Terms of the merger include Pixar’s John Lasseter becoming Disney’s new chief creative officer in charge of animation at the combined Disney-Pixar Animation Studios, as well as principal creative advisor at Walt Disney Imagineering, the unit of the company responsible for research and development of Disney theme parks worldwide.

Jobs purchased what became Pixar for $10 million in 1986 from George Lucas’s computer animation division at Lucasfilm. Toy Story, its first feature film, came a decade later, and began a long string of animation hits, including Finding Nemo. Such successes proved to be increasingly elusive for Disney to manage on its own. The partnership between the two studios had become shaky in recent years, as former Disney head Michael Eisner clashed with Jobs over the renewal terms of their agreement. In 2003, prior to his dismissal from Disney, Eisner infuriated Pixar’s creative team by predicting Finding Nemo would be a failure. Steve Jobs broke off negotiations in January 2004, having told one executive previously, “I don’t see how the relationship can continue as long as Eisner is there.”

Ringworm In Dogs And Cats

Have you ever heard of ringworm? It’s actually not a worm at all. Ringworm is a fungal infection that gets its name from the red ring that appears on human skin, and it can affect pets, too. Below, your animal hospital Sarasota, FL tells you more.

Symptoms of Ringworm

The common symptoms of ringworm in pets are crusty or scaled areas of the skin, hair loss, and hair that’s easily pulled out.

Treatment for Ringworm

Your vet will probably prescribe or recommend a medicated shampoo or lotion to bathe your pet with. This kills off the fungal spores to stop the infection. Note that you’ll need to quarantine your pet from other animals in the house, as ringworm is easily transmissible. You’ll also want to wear gloves while handling your pet so as not to get infected yourself.

Prevention Tips

Pets encounter the fungal spores that cause ringworm in their environment. While there’s no guarantee you can prevent your pet from coming into contact with these spores, keeping them away from wild animals and dirty areas is always a good idea. Don’t let your pet roam around outdoors unsupervised.

Former NBA ref surrenders to charges he bet on games he officiated

Wednesday, August 15, 2007

Tim Donaghy, an ex-NBA referee, surrendered today for an appearance in a Brooklyn federal court. Law enforcement officials said that Donaghy allegedly placed his own bets, and also released confidential information to others, including referees’ schedules. Today, Donaghy pleaded guilty to ‘conspiracy to engage in wire fraud’ and ‘transmitting wagering information to other individuals’. These two charges could result in up to 25 years in jail.

Tim Frank, a NBA spokesman, told the Associated Press the league was informed yesterday that Donaghy would plead today but was not given any further information.

Both John Lauro, Donaghy’s attorney, and federal prosecutors did not comment. But, NBA commissioner David Stern said a month ago that the ex-referee’s lawyer told the league Donaghy was contemplating a plea. The plea was made official early today.

Donaghy has been reportedly cooperating with prosecuting attorneys who together are building a case against other people to whom Donaghy may have provided inside information to. It has also been reported that Donaghy had a biased view against the Detroit Pistons, therefore making bets against them, and then calls against them as well

Donaghy today told the court that he had a gambling problem. However, he also said that he was receiving treatment for it.

The Associated Press reports that no other NBA officials or players are suspects in this case.

The FBI contacted the NBA on June 20, 2007 to talk about a referee who was allegedly gambling on games. The FBI and the NBA officially met on June 21. Donaghy resigned from his position July 9, after over ten years as a referee

Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students/LA-ND

See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.

Rachel Weisz wants Botox ban for actors

Tuesday, July 7, 2009

English actress Rachel Weisz thinks that Botox injections should be banned for all actors.

The 39-year-old actress, best known for her roles in the Mummy movie franchise and for her Academy Award-winning portrayal in The Constant Gardener, feels facial Botox injections leave actors less able to convey emotion and that it harms the acting industry as much as steroids harm athletes.

In an interview with UK’s Harper’s Bazaar, coming out next month, Weisz says, “It should be banned for actors, as steroids are for sportsmen,” she claims. “Acting is all about expression; why would you want to iron out a frown?”

Currently living in New York, she also mentions that English women are much less worried about their physical appearance than in the United States. “I love the way girls in London dress,” she claimed. “It’s so different to the American ‘blow-dry and immaculate grooming’ thing.”

Rv Storage Compartments And 3 Easy Ways For Thieves To Prosper

RV Storage Compartments and 3 Easy Ways for Thieves to Prosper

by

Les Doll

Outside accessible storage space is a boon to the modern RVer.

Why clutter up your interior storage cabinets? Now you have outside accessible storage capacity that will eliminate the hassles and bothers of stowing all your necessary gear inside. This compartment is just the right size for that, and that compartment is just made for this. You can put your new golf clubs and bags in here… So says the sales brochure…but… Out side accessible storage space is also a boon to the many various “low-lifes” and rip-off artists of our society. While thefts from your RV may not be an issue while parked in a crowded RV park, what about the times you are parked in a crowded Walmart parking lot? Who would question someone rooting around in a motorhome or trailer storage compartment in some supermarket parking lot? Would you? Think about what you have stored in those compartments; that $300 fly rod that is too long to fit in the inside closet; that video camera with all the accessories, bags and batteries; your 35mm camera, tripod, and flash; the new tool set you just bought; the new portable barbecue with the auto-igniter, spare tanks, and on and on… Did you know that I have the keys to your storage compartments in my pocket? Take out your key ring, right now, and examine your compartment key. does it have a number stamped on it? And would that number be, say,CH751 or ES201? You know, with those keys, you could probably open your neighbors compartments, the compartments in the trailer next in line, and so on, to the end of the row. And, speaking about keys, does your entry door have a locking mechanism with two places to lock the door (one to lock the handle and one to throw the dead bolt)? The one that locks the handle will be marked with a C or an E and is a universal type of lock. In other words, my C or E passkey will unlock your trailer if you use only this lock. Every RV salesman, technician or manufacturer has a passkey for this one lock. Any crook could obtain this key with very little or no difficulty. Not that I’m not saying that RV salespeople, technicians, or manufacturers are crooks, but the keys are out there and therefore are susceptible. Use your deadbolt lock, or better yet, install a quality after market deadbolt lock. I also have a key that will fit 90% of all the compartments on most RVs built since 1965. Most of the time, these older compartment locks could be opened with an ordinary screwdriver or a dime or any object small enough to insert into the keyway. Now, if I was a thief, any possession that you have stored in those compartments could be mine in a matter of seconds. Also, consider that once I have access to the inside of that compartment, it is an easy matter to lift out the dinette cover, or tip up the sofa, or kick in a panel to gain access to the inside of the unit. Take a good look at your trailer or motorhome and view it as if you had locked your keys inside somehow. How many ways can you see of gaining access to the interior? Now think of how many ways you could break into that RV if you were not concerned with destruction of any kind. How about that roof vent? It consists of a plastic lid that can easily be ripped off, a nylon screen that you could poke your finger through, and a 14″ x 14″ opening to shinny through. And, you know, there is a convenient ladder right on the back of that trailer for a thief to use! The compartment door is usually made of an aluminum frame with a skin of sheet aluminum on the exterior and possibly some kind of insulation sandwiched between an inner skin of aluminum. A good swift kick to any part of the door would be sufficient to cave in these defenses. The locking mechanism consists of a tab that slides into a corresponding groove on the frame when the key is turned. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that a flat bar inserted between the frame and the door can pop this lock in seconds. Not exactly Fort Knox, is it? You simply have to take an active part in your own security. Make sure your valuables are inside and out of sight, preferably in some sort of safe. They make those to put in the floors, you know. And you might start thinking about installing alarms at any points of entry, i.e.; outside compartment doors, windows, etc. If you do, make sure they are L-O-U-D! Think about outside lighting, too. Motion sensors are good. Those crooks don’t like light and they sure don’t like noise. Make it tough on them and they’ll go elsewhere. Now…don’t you feel better?

US: Melamine from contaminated pet food enters human food chain

Sunday, April 29, 2007

At least 45 people are reported to have eaten pork which came from a hog farm in Ceres, California in the United States, where pigs from the farm were fed pet food which was recalled because it was contaminated with the chemical melamine.

So far none of the individuals have experienced signs of illnesses, but it is not known what effect the chemical, when ingested, has on humans because no major study has taken place on melamine.

On April 21, at least seven urine samples taken from pigs at hog farm, were tested and the results came back positive for the chemical melamine. At least three samples from the feed used to feed the pigs were tested and those results also came back positive for melamine.

Yesterday, the United States Food and Drug Administration or FDA, said in a statement that “we have no evidence of harm to humans associated with the processed pork product” and that “no recall of meat products processed from these animals is being issued.”

Despite the consumption of pork by humans, the FDA states that the risk to human health is minimal.

“The assessment that, if there were to be harm to human health, it would be very low, is based on a number of factors, including the dilution of the contaminating melamine and melamine-related compounds from the original rice protein concentrate as it moves through the food system. First it is a partial ingredient in the pet food; second, it is only part of the total feed given to the hogs; third, it is not known to accumulate in the hogs and the hogs excrete melamine in their urine; fourth, even if present in pork, pork is only a small part of the average American diet. Neither FDA nor USDA has uncovered any evidence of harm to the swine from the contaminated feed,” added the statement.

On March 19, the manufacturer of the food, Menu Foods, which is based in Mississauga, Ontario in Canada, recalled all of its dog and cat food which totaled over 60 million items. On April 28, Canadian officials announced that they will hold products, such as wheat and corn gluten, as well as soy and rice proteins that have been imported from China until they can be tested for melamine.

It is not known how extensive the outbreak is.

Honduran capital’s main airport reopens six weeks after jetliner crash

Sunday, July 6, 2008

Toncontin International Airport, serving the Honduran capital Tegucigalpa, has reopened fully to air traffic six weeks after a deadly jetliner crash. TACA Flight 390, an Airbus A320 carrying 124 people, overshot the runway in poor weather and ran across a busy street, killing five, two of whom were on the ground. The accident occurred on May 30.

Since the crash the airport has refused to allow aircraft with more than 42 passengers on board to operate from the airport due to safety fears. Only domestic flights were allowed to land. Air traffic that did not conform to these rules instead landed at San Pedro Sula‘s Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport, which is 112 miles North of Tegucigalpa.

Manuel Zelaya, President of Honduras, announced the reopening after spending three hours in a meeting with businessmen who demanded the airport return to full operations. He also said that future plans are to route all commercial traffic to a new airport under construction at a nearby US air base, which is scheduled to enter service next year.

So far, American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Panama’s Copa Airlines and TACA have all confirmed intent to resume flights to Toncontin International next week, by which time they will have reprogrammed their routing schedules accordingly.

The airport is considered one of the most dangerous in the world and for years people have called for its replacement. The airport features an inadequately short runway, outdated navigational equipment and is surrounded by hills.

Free Clairvoyant Reading Get The Best Clairvoyants Online

By Rachels Saxon

Clairvoyant readings are medium readings, it is one of the abilities and specialities in the medium reading. They adopt a different method in going about psychic reading services. Like the other medium readers they arrive at their reading through perception. They however perceive by seeing. They are said to have a third eye with which they are able to see events in the spirit world. There are different ways clairvoyant readings are conducted; there is the free clairvoyant reading and the paid clairvoyant reading. Both the free clairvoyant reading and the paid one are very necessary for an enduring clairvoyant session. Free clairvoyant readings are done through the various forms of Internet connection and phone clairvoyant readings. Free readings for the phone is done through what is known as toll free readings. This is a dedicated telephone line which clients are asked to dial to have access to a reader. When the number is dialled the provider will then dial back to the number where preliminary readings are conducted for the client. At this stage the clairvoyant reader is trying to establish himself to the heart and mind of the client. When the client provides the free clairvoyant reader with his basic or personal information he will perform a reading for him, just for him to know the stuff he is made of. Such free readings can then be relied on by the service seeker to commit the reader to the real psychic reading business. Many providers have used the method to reach out to many clients who their after retain their services.

Free clairvoyant readings are more predominant in the Internet or the online services. A visit to any reputable Webster will first welcome you to the site and then show you a button which you can click for free clairvoyant readings. Many websites use this option to create their own mailing list of customers. They do provide periodical free clairvoyant readings to their clients and at the same time advising them to pay for further readings so that some rituals can be done for them. However for those who could not pay, they will have access to the free clairvoyant readings, but the problem is that the quality of service which the free service provides may not be the best one the client wants. Clients are always advised to engage a clairvoyant reader on a paid service basis, because that is the only guarantee for him to obtain a complete and comprehensive reading.

While a free clairvoyant reading is good for determining the quality of service the provider is capable of providing, for goodness sake it should not be an end to itself. What is proper is that it should be used to test run the capability of the clairvoyant reader. It is necessary to use the free reading service to test run them because a lot of ugly things are now happening in the psychic world. The Internet has brought in many things including those who know next to nothing about clairvoyant readings who now parade themselves in the Internet as service providers. Through the free reading programme every provider should be tested for originality and authenticity. Any service provider who fails to offer such free clairvoyant reading tests should be done away with. In fact any provider who refuses to offer free services before paid services should be discarded because nothing good will ever come out of them. However for an enduring and comprehensive reading once it has been established that the reader is genuine the reading should be completed with payment so that some rituals will be conducted if necessary. It is in the best interest of the service seeker that he pays for the psychic reading for a complete reading to be done for him.
