Norwegian scientist published fake findings in Lancet

Tuesday, January 17, 2006

According to Norwegian and British newspaper sources, Jon Sudbø, a cancer researcher at the Norwegian Radium Hospital, fabricated at least 900 patient records in his research on NSAID drugs published in October of 2005 (PMID 16226613). According to the now-discredited research, the class of drugs, commonly used for pain management, was found to decrease the risk of oral cancer but increase the risk of heart disease.

This field of research is important for the future use of Cox-2 drugs and was received with great interest by the United States Food and Drug Administration and other organizations involved in drug safety and efficacy.

Several other scientists put their name to the article in the Lancet but claim they were misled by Sudbø. The Lancet is publishing a retraction in its upcoming edition. Probes are underway both to investigate how this article passed peer review, and whether previous research by Sudbø was fraudulent.

Rhode Island borrows $90 million from US for jobless claims

Thursday, October 1, 2009

Rhode Island will receive US$90 million in funding from the United States federal government to support unemployment benefits in the state.

Rhode Island’s Department of Labor and Training stated on Wednesday that it requested the line of credit because the account utilized to provide funding to unemployed individuals in the state had decreased to only $2 million; enough to last only a few days.

Unemployment insurance customers will not experience any delays in receiving their weekly payments.

In a statement released by the Department, the agency said: “Unemployment insurance customers will not experience any delays in receiving their weekly payments.”

Unemployment in Rhode Island was 12.8 percent in August 2009 – the third-highest rate in the United States. During the first eight months of 2009, Rhode Island’s state unemployment insurance trust fund has provided over $300 million in unemployment benefit funding.

In addition to Rhode Island, 20 other states have outstanding balances on money they borrowed from the Federal Unemployment Account of the United States Department of Labor. Rhode Island has an outstanding balance of approximately $90.68 million due to the account. The loans are interest-free until December 2010.

I couldn’t have asked for more. Um, it’s a team of coaches. I don’t take all the credit myself. There’s, uh, two people up there that know who they are who’ve been fantastic.”

Seriously.”

Power Point To Video Your Final Power Point Presentation}

PowerPoint to video – Your final PowerPoint presentation

by

DaisyNow it’s time for us to think a little different for our presentation! You can do your final presentation with Acoolsoft PPT2Video Converter http://www.ppt-to-video.comWhat video formats we are talking about?A Video refers to recording, manipulating, and displaying moving images, especially in a format that can be presented on a television. Video formats are confusing because most video files have at least two different types: the container and the codec used inside that container. I’ll list some common video formats that we often used :AVI (.avi): Most commonly contains M-JPEG (especially from digital cameras?) or DivX (for whole movies), but can contain nearly any format (not Sorenson).Sometimes you’ll see a reference to the “fourcc”: this is a four-character code (such as “divx” or “mpeg”) inside the AVI container which specifies which video codec is being used.QuickTime(MOV): Most often used for the locked Apple Sorenson codec, or for Cinepak (free), but can also hold other codes such as mjpeg, etc.WMV (.wmv): More or less MPEG4; can contain nearly any codec, including several Microsoft spinoffs of MPEG-4 which vary in their freedom and licensing requirements.ASF (“Advanced Streaming Format”, .asf): a subset of wmv, intended primarily for streaming: an early Microsoft implementation of an MPEG4 codec.MPEG (“Moving Pictures Expert Group”): three video formats, MPEG 1, 2, and 4.MPEG-1: Old, supported by everything (at least up to 352×240), reasonably efficient, most used in VCD.MPEG-2: A souped-up version of MPEG-1, with better compression.720×480.Used in HDTV, DVD, and SVCD.MPEG-4: A family of codecs, some of which are open, others Microsoft proprietary. A good format for the web.MPEG spinoffs: mp3 (for music) and VideoCDDisadvantages of PowerPointPowerPoint presentation can work only on computer having Windows Operating system and Microsoft PowerPoint installed in it. The Tour de France will be in London and the South East for the two days of the 7th and 8th of July. The event will start in Trafalgar Square at 15:00 BST (UTC+1).

“I believe this will be the most spectacular Grand Départ the Tour has ever seen and the weekend will underline London’s great sporting reputation,” said Ken Livingstone, mayor of London.

The parts of the Tour that London will be hosting are the Prologue and Stage One. The Prologue will be on Saturday, the 7th of July, starting in Trafalgar Square at 15:00 BST and finishing at 18:20 BST. Sarkozy appoints François Fillon as Prime Minister of France

Thursday, May 17, 2007 File:Francois fillon1.jpg

The new President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy has appointed François Fillon to head the new French government. Fillon’s predecessor Dominique de Villepin stepped down yesterday, and formally handed over the post during a ceremony today.

The nomination did not come as a surprise after the British newspaper the Financial Times had reported on May 8 that Sarkozy had introduced Fillon to Tony Blair in a telephone conversation.

François Fillon (53) has been the political advisor of Sarkozy in the UMP for the past 2 years, and he was Sarko’s campaign leader during the recent presidential elections. Fillon has experience in negotiating with the trade unions, having undertaken controversial reforms of the 35-hour workweek and the pension system. Sarkozy in his inauguration speech on Wednesday reiterated his plans to reform the French labour and social system, and Fillon will have to oversee these reforms as the new Prime Minister. Sarkozy said he wants to make the economy more flexible and lessen social tensions.

I expect I’ll end up being the first French premier with a Welsh wife.

The Guardian reported that Fillon is an Anglophile; his wife Penelope Clarke, with whom he has 5 children, was born in Wales. Ideologically, Fillon is being described as a moderate left-leaning member of the conservative UMP party.

Fillon had his first experience as a minister in 1993 when he became Minister for the Higher education and Research under PM Édouard Balladur. He later became Minister for the Post office, Telecommunications and Space, then Minister for the social Affairs, Work and Solidarity, and finally Minister for national Education, the Higher education and Research. At the university, he studied public law and political sciences.

Sarkozy might announce his cabinet of 15 ministers as early as Friday, half of which are going to be women, he said. Fillon will lead the UMP in the parliamentary elections next month. A poll on Wednesday predicted a 1.5% increase in votes for the UMP, up to 40%, compared to 28% status-quo for the allied socialists.

Reports say that Sarkozy has offered the foreign minister post to Bernard Kouchner, co-founder of Médecins Sans Frontières, who is seen as being on the left in French politics.
