Fuzlullah named Pakistan’s new Taliban leader

Friday, November 8, 2013

Pakistan’s Taliban announced Thursday they had chosen Mullah Fazlullah as their new leader. A US drone attack last week killed their previous leader, Hakimullah Mehsud.

Fazlullah, who takes credit for ordering the attack on schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai in 2012, is known for his rejection of peace talks.

The Pakistani government has suggested the United States’ fatal missile strike on Mehsud had already ruined peace talk efforts with the Taliban. The drone strike which killed Mehsud coincided with government preparations to meet the terrorist group with the view of opening peace talks. Pakistani Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan called the killing of Mehsud “not just the killing of person, it’s the death of all peace efforts”.

Fuzlullah led the Pakistani Taliban in Pakistan’s Swat Valley between roughly 2007 and 2009.

Pakistani authorities believe Fuzlullah is presently living in the Afghan province of Kunar.

India Railway Minister presents 2014-15 budget

Friday, July 11, 2014

On Tuesday, Indian Railway Minister D. V. Sadananda Gowda presented his first budget for Indian Railways.

The budget emphasized increased amenities for travelers, better safety, and timely completion of projects. There were no fare hikes announced as both passenger and freight fares had been increased last month. But, it was announced that fares will be revised twice a year to absorb fuel costs. Gowda criticized previous governments for announcing new projects and failing to complete them. He said projects will now be prioritized, such as decongesting major routes instead of announcing new ones. Gowda announced no major new projects, but announced 54 new trains. He also criticized the last government for driving the railways into a loss.

Gowda announced a bullet train between Mumbai and Ahmedabad; new semi-high speed trains in nine sectors connecting metros; and new measures towards improving cleanliness, food, and e-ticketing were announced. He said CCTVs will be installed in major stations to monitor cleanliness, and major stations will have food courts serving local cuisines and precooked food from reputable catering brands will be served on-board. The railways have faced complaints of substandard food in the past.

He announced the introduction of a new rail-flaw detection system to better investigate the causes of accidents. The budget allocated a significant sum to the construction of bridges at unmanned crossings, a major cause of rail-track deaths. He announced a new project to introduce automatic closing doors on mainline and suburban trains, and said wi-fi will be provided in larger stations and select trains. Workstations will be available for on-board use for a fee by Business travelers. The e-ticketing system will be extended from booking tickets to booking coaches and entire trains, and also retiring rooms in stations. Electric mobility carts will be provided to elderly and handicapped passengers at all major stations. Also, Railway Protection Force will recruit four thousand female constables and escorted carriages will be provided for women. A significant amount was announced for improving rail connectivity in north-east India.

Gowda emphasized use of public-private partnerships (PPPs) to fund future projects. He also said he will ask the Cabinet to approve foreign direct investment (FDI) in Indian Railways. Some stations are to be improved using PPPs. Manish R. Sharma, executive director of capital projects and infrastructure at PricewaterhouseCoopers, pointed out the budget didn’t contain any information on how the government intends to attract private investors. Deven Choksey, managing director at K. R. Choksey securities, said the government now seemed to be more inclined towards PPPs than before. India’s stock index SENSEX dropped and closed 2% below opening. Investors were observed selling shares in energy, infrastructure, and real estate sectors.

Bangladesh security tightened following Pilkhana massacre and Bashundhara City fire

Friday, March 20, 2009

Following the Pilkhana massacre which occurred February 25 and 26 leaving 74 dead and the inferno at the Bashundhara City shopping mall complex March 13 leaving seven dead, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said security measures are being tightened countrywide across Bangladesh.

Fire drills will be enacted at all key-point installations (KPI). Fire fighting systems will be examined by the fire brigade and the public works department (PWD) to ensure functionality. Security measures will be enhanced supplementing areas under private security such as at the Bashundhara City Complex.

The Fire Service and Civil Defence Department requires modernization and needs new equipment to fight fires past the sixth floor of buildings. The Fire Brigade says it needs turntable ladders, snorkels, foam-tenders, lighting units, emergency tenders, fireproof uniforms, and rescue ropes for fire fighting and rescue operations. Transportation to fires is also an issue due to narrow roads, low electrical wires and congestion.

The Bangladesh National Building Code requires fire fighting equipment installed in buildings over seven floors. This code is to be monitored by authorities to ensure compliance with the new guidelines and to make sure buildings are being maintained.

The Bashundhara City Complex opened Monday for shoppers two days after Friday’s blaze. A probe is underway to determine the cause of the fire and to assess structural damage.

Loss of life was minimized as the blaze broke out on a Friday, the beginning of the weekend in Bangladesh, so offices in the upper floors were empty. The lower eight floors are used for shopping and the upper floors are all Bashundhara Group offices.

The mall is valued at Tk 7.0 billion (US$100 million). It is not known if the complex is covered by fire insurance.

It is estimated that it will take over two years to rebuild the area damaged by flames which were burned down to a skeleton. Bashundhara City’s technical advisor, Latifur Rahman, estimated damages at Tk 2.0 billion (US$29m).

Only one television cameraman has been allowed in to film the burnt area. None of the 2,500 shops, cinemas or cafes were burnt by the inferno. The seventh and eighth floors still experience smoke damage, and there was water damage to merchandise.

A three member committee is currently investigating the cause of the fire which will consist of Iqbal Khan Chowdhury, joint secretary of the ministry, representatives of the police, IGP Noor Muhammad, and fire brigade, Director General Abu Nayeem Md Shahidullah. The committee is required to report within the week with their findings. The forensics department is also sifting through the burnt remains.

The Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industries has also formed a committee which has begun interviewing witnesses and recording their testimony alongside the government committee.

It has been discovered that 150 closed circuit cameras were not being used when the fire started. Another mystery is why the mall fire fighting system has been found unused.

Why the fire burnt so fiercely is a matter to think….These matters seem to be mysterious

“In the shopping mall there is an ultra-technology elevator which runs even without electricity but we have found that locked,” Iqbal Khan Chowdhury, joint secretary (Police) of the home ministry, said. “Why the fire burnt so fiercely is a matter to think. We have to see if there was any incendiary substance there. These matters seem to be mysterious.”

Mall management has been asked to submit substances and items which would have been in the upper floors when the fire started. The fire erupted on the 17th floor and spread quickly to the two floors above and engulfed the three floors below. The aerial ladders belonging to the Fire Service and Civil Defence reached as high as the 13th floor of the 21-storey building.

Videos have been sent to the United States (US) for examination to assist in determining the cause of the fire and to help in the damage assessment. Experts from the US are expected to arrive soon.

Firefighters were brought to the rooftop of the 20-storey tower by helicopter. The only fatality in this operation was Baki Billa, a firefighter of Bashundhara City firefighting department, who fell when climbing down a rope from a helicopter to the roof of the building. Three other firefighters made the transition safely. At this same time, the chief security officer was safely rescued by the Bangladesh Air Force helicopter, a Bell 212. Six security officers of the complex also lost their lives.

Monarchy abolished in Nepal

Thursday, May 29, 2008

The Nepalese Constituent Assembly, elected on April 10, in Nepal recently voted to abolish its monarchy, with a large majority supporting the vote in parliament. “The Nepalese people have been freed from centuries of feudal tradition and the doors have now opened for a radical social and economic transformation,” said a government spokesperson, commenting on the decision.

The former king, Gyanendra of Nepal, has been given two weeks to leave his palace. Authorities say that he will be forced out if he fails to leave during that period of time.

The Nepalese president, Girija Prasad Koirala, also commented on the move: “Today is the day when my dreams have been realized and similarly the dreams of the nation have perhaps also been realized.”

Ban Ki-moon, the Secretary General of the United Nations, said that by supporting the switch to a republic, the Nepalese people have “clearly spoken for peace and change.”

Take Control Of Your Inner Voice}

Submitted by: Diane Corriette

Deep within you lies a voice your own voice, which has been created based on your past experiences, even the experiences you think you have forgotten about, or you dont think about on a daily basis are buried deep within you.

This inner voice that constantly speaks within you will be repeating those original events and messages to you daily and your future will be created from them.So if the events were negative then many of your inner messages will be.

For people with low self esteem your inner voice will be your own worst enemy, your saboteur and critic, constantly belittling your efforts, punishing your mistakes and criticizing.

Do you ever find yourself berating yourself for something that youve done? Have you ever found yourself struggling with something that you know you should do but keep talking yourself out of? Thats your inner voice.

If you are struggling with doing what you really want to in life check out what your inner voice is saying to you. Maybe its letting you know that there is no way you can achieve something.

Or Maybe it’s telling you not to take the risk because you will fail?

The best way to change the messages that your inner voice is throwing at you is to find things you have accomplished, no matter how small, almost as a counter argument. Yes but. You can tell it, and then remind yourself of that achievement of yours.

Ultimately, this is your voice, its in your head, so you have complete control over it and thats the thing you need to remember. Its time to take back control of your inner voice.

Its time to talk back to your inner voice in whatever way works for you, this is the way to combat it and let it know who is really in charge, YOU! You can swear at it or let it know you won’t be listening to it anymore, whatever you need to do to break the pattern.

Begin to recognize what your inner voice is saying and why. Counteract whatever it tells you that is negative with a positive statement or promise.

Using positive statements and self-talk will support you in improving your self-esteem, and when used consistently, and repeated often you will train your unconscious mind to change what you believe about yourself.

Give yourself time to really immerse yourself in positive statements and to make them a natural part of your life. This is a journey, not a quick fix and you will need the patience to keep affirming yourself when your inner voice decides to do otherwise.

British military secrets leaked on social networking sites

Tuesday, January 26, 2010

Britain’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) has admitted sixteen instances of sensitive information being leaked on social networking websites in the past eighteen months. Ten employees have been disciplined for misuse of the sites. The revelations follow a Freedom of Information request by Lewis PR and computer security company F-Secure.

The MoD would not comment on what disciplinary action was taken, or whether the leaks involved operational information. The ministry’s guidelines state that staff must obtain clearance to release any information that is related to sensitive, controversial or political matters, or military operations.

“It’s worrying that employees in sensitive positions have been sharing confidential information via Twitter and other means,” said Mikko Hypponen, of F-Secure. “Loose Tweets can cost lives.”

According to Lewis PR, computers on the main MoD networks are blocked from visiting social networking sites. However there are a small number within the department which have unrestricted Internet access. Some personnel in Afghanistan and Iraq also have access through internet cafés on military bases.

The ministry’s “online engagement guidelines”, released in August last year, recognise the importance of social media such as Facebook for personnel keeping in touch with friends and family. According to the document: “Service and MOD civilian personnel are encouraged to talk about what they do, but within certain limits to protect security, reputation and privacy.”

Gay couple elected prom king and queen in Maine’s Sanford High School

Friday, June 3, 2011

Although prom may have taken place over two weeks ago at Maine’s Sanford High School, the fact that students elected a gay couple as prom king and queen remains the talk of the local community.

During the May 14 event, 17-year-old Christian Nelsen was named prom queen, running as a write-in candidate. One of Nelsen’s friends, Holly Smith, spoke of the help they provided in getting him elected: “The day of prom, we went downstairs, and he was yelling ‘Vote for Christian Nelsen!’ And I was helping people spell his name, or telling them how to write it on the ballot”.

Anyone can win, and on that same notion any type of person can win.

Nelsen’s boyfriend, Caleb Jett, was elected prom king. “I kinda got voted in because he got queen, and it was like ‘Who do we vote for king?’ and it was like ‘Oh, well, his boyfriend, obviously, because that makes sense,'” he said. The two young men wore suits, shirts, and ties to the prom. When the results of the election were announced, they danced the king-queen dance together, Jett wearing his crown and Nelsen his tiara.

Maine is one of only two states in New England that have not recognized same-sex marriages. Though they are aware that not everyone supports them, the couple ran to combat high school stereotypes and to encourage more tolerance. Nelsen commented, “It doesn’t matter if it’s a guy or a girl who wins prom king or prom queen from now on. Anyone can win, and on that same notion any type of person can win. And I’m talking about the tolerance level of all people when I talk about that, so anyone who is bullied or even just under the radar can win this type of thing.”

Minister of a parish of the United Church of Christ Reverend Diane Wendorf supported the couple, citing her church’s values of tolerance and diversity. “I’m glad, too, that they were crowned king and queen, because there are all different kinds of people in this world.” Some Sanford residents a local news agency interviewed did not approve of the gay couple’s crowning, though none agreed to go on camera — out of concerns that their comments might offend someone.

The matter is expected to be brought up by interested citizens at an upcoming school committee meeting. Committee Chair Mark Lucier stated that the school is gathering information on the election, and that the committee may decide if it needs to address the future selection of prom kings and queens.

Checking Accounts Without Fees 5 Steps To Choosing The Right Bank}

Submitted by: Robbie T. James

Bank fees are something that most of us never anticipated before we got our first bank account. Whether you got your first checking account right out of high school, or maybe when you took your first job, it is likely that you never thought you would end up paying so many bank fees.

The theory of bank fees makes sense, of course. After all, banks do provide a valuable service and this service cannot be free. And let’s face it: checking accounts and all of the features and benefits that go along with them are pretty handy, including access to debit cards, online banking, online bill-pay, ATMs for cash withdrawal, and of course the ability to write checks.

Still, if you are like most other folks, you probably feel like checking account fees have gotten a bit out of hand over the past few years. It is not pleasant to check your checking account bank statement at the end of the month and see a host of fees that add up to $100 or more. Nobody needs that, especially in these economic times.

The key is to find banks that offer checking accounts without fees – or with low fees.

If you are looking for checking accounts without fees, here are 5 steps to choosing the right bank:

1. Understand the types of fees banks charge:

There are a number of fees that banks charge. These include, for example: monthly checking account fees, per-use check fees, fees for viewing scanned copies of previously-written checks online, overdraft fees, and bill-paying fees. There are also fees for ordering checks, requesting certain special types of bank statements, and transferring balances between accounts (as part of overdraft protection), and more. That’s a lot of bank fees!

2. Decide what other bank features you are interested in:

Before you start shopping for a bank that offers checking accounts without fees, decide for yourself which other features you are looking for in a bank. Besides charging few or no fees, you may also want (for example) a bank that: is FDIC-insured, offers a lot of local branches near you, is a big-name national bank, has a reputation for excellent customer service, or offers extensive auto and home loan programs.

3. Conduct an online search for banks that meet your criteria:

Next, conduct an online search for banks that offer what you are looking for. A great place to start is to look for “no overdraft fee” banks, since overdraft fees are one of the most costly types of fees (to the tune of $25 billion in the U.S. alone each year) that banks charge.

4. Make a list of at least 5 finalist low-fee or no-fee banks:

Now, make yourself a list of 5 “finalist” banks that offer low-fee or no-fee checking – as well as that meet some or all of your other requirements.

5. Contact at least 3 of the banks and see which ones you get the best impression from:

Now, go online, visit, or call and see how you feel about each finalist bank. What is your chemistry with the with whom persons you speak? Do you like the feel of their website? Pay attention to how you feel, because these factors will likely remain true if you become a customer with that bank.

Take these 5 steps to choosing the right bank for you that offers checking accounts without fees.

In recent months corporate investors are paying more attention to virtual worlds. This is mainly due to the fact that the audience is shifting from TV to Internet. Another advantage of virtual worlds is that they can help in marketing products and promoting brands.
